According to a survey conducted by the China Institute for Income Distribution at Beijing Normal University, the monthly incomes of Chinese households are divided into thirteen levels. The population with no monthly income amounts to 5.46 million. Those with a monthly income of 0-1000 RMB are 541 million, while those with 1000-2000 RMB are 416 million, and those with 2000-3000 RMB are 207 million.

After calculation, the total population with a monthly income below 3000 RMB reaches a staggering 1.169 billion, constituting 83.5% of the total population. As long as the monthly income exceeds 3000 RMB, one can be ranked within the top 17% in China.

The population with a monthly income of 3000-5000 RMB is 156 million, meaning that those with a monthly income below 5000 RMB make up 94.6% of the entire Chinese population. Only 5% of the population has a monthly income exceeding 5000 RMB. These figures do not include the underground economy, inheritance of property from parents or relatives, and individuals who falsely report their income for tax considerations.
