由於嚴格的簽證問題，截至2022年至2023年，目前在美國就讀的中國大陸學生僅有28.9萬名。中國駐美國大使館特別發表聲明，表示歧視留學生的做法違反美國自由民主的價值觀，同時損害中國公民的合法權益。
