Recently, Takashi Niinami, the Chairman and CEO of Japan’s renowned company Suntory Holdings, officially submitted his resignation on September 1, drawing widespread public attention. The background of this incident dates back to August 22, when the Fukuoka Prefectural Police searched Niinami’s residence in Minato Ward, Tokyo, on suspicion of importing health supplements from the United States containing THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a derivative of cannabis. Reports indicate that during the search, Niinami stated that he believed these products were legal health supplements and that they had been sent to him voluntarily by a female acquaintance. However, the police did not actually find the supplements during the search, and Niinami’s preliminary urine test also returned negative.
The legal context involves Japan’s Cannabis Control Act and Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act, amended on December 12, 2024, which explicitly classify cannabis and its psychoactive component THC as “narcotics.” Importing, possessing, or using such substances is therefore illegal. Although no illegal substances were found and no positive test results were recorded, the incident has already attracted significant attention regarding corporate governance and public opinion.
Suntory, as a globally recognized food, beverage, and alcoholic beverage company, has a product lineup that includes Suntory Oolong Tea as well as well-known Japanese whiskies such as Hibiki, Yamazaki, and Hakushu. This incident inevitably impacts the company’s brand image and public trust. Niinami’s resignation is seen as an act of accountability for the incident and a response to the company’s external risk management and social responsibility. Overall, the case highlights the close connection between the personal conduct of executives and corporate reputation, while serving as a reminder of the importance for corporate leaders to remain vigilant regarding legal compliance and personal behavior.
