At the age of 30, Yu Leiming was a well-off young man in Shanghai. He owned three luxury homes, drove a Porsche, ran his own company, and enjoyed a sweet relationship with his girlfriend. Yet one accident changed the course of his life forever. One day, his beloved dog “Xiao Ai,” whom he had raised for over ten years, went missing. Yu frantically searched the city, posting thousands of flyers, but to no avail. During the search, he encountered countless stray dogs—crippled by car accidents, abused by humans, or dying in garbage dumps. Each of them reminded him of Xiao Ai. He asked himself: If Xiao Ai had become a stray, would anyone be kind enough to help her?

With that thought, he took home his first stray, then another, and another. Soon, his house could no longer accommodate them. He began renting homes, but constant complaints from neighbors over barking and odor forced him to move again and again, from Nanhui to Fengxian to Chongming Island. Moving costs alone drained hundreds of thousands of yuan. In the end, he sold even his last marital home and relocated with his dogs to a remote mountain in Anhui, where he established the “Chang’an Rescue Base.”

This decision came at great personal cost. His girlfriend, frustrated and heartbroken, issued an ultimatum: “It’s either me or the dogs.” Yu, pointing to the helpless animals, begged: “Look how pitiful they are.” She could not understand his devotion, and the relationship ended. His parents also tried to stop him, fearing he had lost his mind, but Yu could no longer turn back.

In the mountains, he built kennels with his own hands, laid electrical cables, and nearly died during construction. Disaster soon followed: in 2020, a flood destroyed the base, forcing him to wade through waters all night to save over 3,000 dogs. In 2021, a fire engulfed the storage house, and he charged into the flames to rescue the animals, suffering severe burns. On top of this, thieves and malicious intruders broke into the base, poisoning and beating dogs, and stealing supplies.

To feed the dogs, Yu spent everything he had. Dog food alone consumed 15 tons per month, not to mention vaccines, deworming, and medical care—costing millions each year. He sold his cars and properties, even cashed in his parents’ insurance, just to keep the dogs alive. Meanwhile, he lived like a beggar—tying his loose pants with IV tubing, wearing second-hand clothes, skipping meals, and refusing medical treatment for himself.

Sixteen years of relentless sacrifice transformed the once-handsome young heir into a frail, white-haired figure, plagued by kidney stones, gastritis, lung nodules, and arthritis. Yet he still insisted on feeding and comforting his dogs every day. In 2023, after coughing blood continuously, he was forced into the hospital. Doctors discovered over 100 nodules in his lungs and warned that his life was in grave danger. But Yu, frowning with worry, refused to stay: “No, I must go back. If I collapse, what will happen to my dogs?”

On August 5, 2023, at just 46 years old, Yu Leiming finally succumbed to illness. His last words, whispered with fading breath, were: “I’m not afraid of death, I can finally rest… but I can’t let go of my dogs.”
