2024-01-15

Shih Ming-teh (January 15, 1941—January 15, 2024) was one of the prominent figures opposing the authoritarian regime of the Kuomintang (KMT) in Taiwan and a well-known political prisoner. He spent nearly 26 years in prison and was likened to "Mandela." During the Formosa Incident, he initially faced the possibility of a death sentence; however, due to the efforts of his American wife and international human rights organizations, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. On May 20, 1990, President Lee Teng-hui granted amnesty to political prisoners from the Formosa Incident, but Shih Ming-teh insisted on unconditional release, leading to the government declaring the original judgment null and void.

He served as the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) from 1993 to 1996 and played a key role as the overall commander of the Red Shirt Army during the anti-Chen Shui-bian movement in the second term of President Chen Shui-bian. Shih Ming-teh passed away on January 15, 2024, at the age of 83.
