According to the latest data released by Japan’s Immigration Services Agency, as of the end of June 2025, the total number of foreign residents in Japan reached 3,956,619, an increase of nearly 190,000 compared to the end of last year, setting a new historical record. Among them, mainland Chinese citizens exceeded 900,000 for the first time, becoming the largest foreign group in the country. This figure specifically refers to individuals holding mainland Chinese passports who reside in Japan legally as foreigners, including students, employees, business owners, and long-term residents with permanent resident status.
It is important to note that residents from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are counted separately in official Japanese statistics. If one includes approximately 60,000 Taiwanese and roughly 20,000 Hong Kong and Macau residents, the total number of ethnic Chinese in Japan already approaches one million. This indicates that the Chinese community in Japan is not only large in number but also increasingly influential across various sectors, including education, business, and local communities.
The steady growth of foreign residents, particularly from mainland China, reflects the deepening educational, economic, and cultural exchanges between China and Japan. Beyond simple demographics, this trend highlights the integration and interconnectedness of Chinese residents within Japanese society in the context of globalization. Japan’s strong economy, social inclusiveness, and employment opportunities continue to attract Chinese nationals to live, study, and work in the country, leading to the development of organized and sizable Chinese communities that contribute significantly to cultural exchange and social cohesion between the two nations.
