The war between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing for over 700 days, with both sides facing a shortage of troops and actively recruiting experienced foreign warriors. This has sparked discussions about the differential treatment of mercenaries who die in battle.

In Ukraine, fallen soldiers, including foreign mercenaries, receive local respect and expressions of grief during funerals, often through gestures such as kneeling or forming lines of tribute. For example, 25-year-old volunteer Chih Sheng-guang from Hualien, Taiwan, who died in November 2022 while fighting against Russian forces in Luhansk Oblast, was honored with a solemn funeral in Lviv. The Ukrainian military also presented his mother with the Ukrainian flag as a gesture of gratitude for Taiwan's support.

In contrast, in December 2023, Chinese mercenary Zhao Rui, who died in Ukraine, did not receive comparable treatment. Zhao's parents stated that they never received any notification from Russia regarding compensation. However, Russian official media claimed that Zhao was impersonating a Russian soldier and accused him of stealing seven women's underwear within Russia, as well as spreading a sexually transmitted disease to Nepalese mercenaries.

Even if these accusations were true, public humiliation of the deceased, especially without proper verification, is inappropriate. Russia, seemingly eager to avoid responsibility for compensation, demanded that Zhao Rui's family pay compensation of 7 million rubles (approximately 2.45 million Taiwanese dollars) for the stolen underwear and damages to the military.

While the truth remains unclear, Russia appears prepared to evade its responsibility to provide compensation for the fallen.
