In response, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a final ultimatum to California, demanding corrective action within 30 days or risk losing $160 million in federal highway funding.

The audit also highlighted that multiple states across the country have irregularities in the management of non-resident commercial licenses, with California’s situation being particularly severe. Federal reports noted that at least five fatal traffic accidents this year involved non-resident CDL holders, resulting in 12 deaths, underscoring major gaps in license eligibility verification.
