From December 9 to 11, 2025, Moscow—the capital of Russia—experienced several consecutive days of large-scale drone attacks, marking a clear escalation in the ongoing conflict. Over the course of three days, Russia’s air-defense systems shot down a total of 37 drones. The frequency and intensity of the assaults were significantly higher than in previous weeks, forcing airports across Moscow to activate the highest level of operational restrictions and plunging the city’s air traffic into chaos.
The attacks reached their peak between the night of December 10 and the early hours of December 11. Russian authorities stated that this was one of the largest drone swarm attacks in recent months. Earlier incidents on September 22–23 and October 27 had already seen 46 and 32 drones shot down respectively, indicating that long-range drone strikes have become a new normal. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin noted that within just one hour on the morning of December 10, air-defense units intercepted four drones over the city, and emergency crews were dispatched immediately to clear debris and prevent further disruption to traffic and daily life.
The continuing drone incursions led authorities to impose strict takeoff and landing restrictions at all Moscow airports, resulting in widespread disruption to civil aviation. According to official data, a total of 378 flights were canceled, delayed, or diverted over the three-day period, affecting tens of thousands of passengers. One of the most notable incidents involved Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s aircraft, which had been scheduled to land in Moscow early on December 11. Due to the lockdown of Moscow’s airspace, the plane was unable to approach the airport and was ultimately diverted to St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport after circling above Moscow for nearly an hour, underscoring the severity of the situation.
These attacks were not isolated. Since September, Moscow has repeatedly been targeted by drone strikes, with Russian officials attributing the assaults to Ukraine, describing them as deliberate operations with both strategic and psychological objectives. On December 9, a separate drone strike had already forced the cancellation of 16 flights, with St. Petersburg designated as an alternative landing site—an early sign of the larger disruptions to come.
Overall, the three-day wave of drone attacks highlighted the rapid evolution of operational tactics in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and temporarily plunged Moscow into a state resembling wartime conditions. The mass flight cancellations, widespread airspace restrictions, and heightened security pressures left a significant impact on Russia’s civil aviation, public safety, and political climate.
