The Shattered Gold Digger Dream: The Murder of Chinese Influencer Yan Ruimin in Thailand
This is a case of brutal murder that shocked both Chinese and Thai societies. The victim was Yan Ruimin, a popular Chinese influencer on Xiaohongshu with millions of followers, known as the "Queen of Making Money." The perpetrator was Ma Yanqing, a serial swindler who masqueraded as a "second-generation rich Shanghainese." What began as a carefully orchestrated "mutual pursuit" ultimately devolved into a ruthless act of murder, dismemberment, and disposal, motivated by financial gain.
The discovery of the crime occurred on July 13, 2024, at an isolated pond in Ban Pho District, Chonburi Province, Thailand. Search dogs led the police to recover human remains from the muddy water, near a scorched pink suitcase. DNA results confirmed that same night that the deceased was 38-year-old Chinese influencer Yan Ruimin, who had travelled to Thailand seemingly to "fish" (meaning to seek out wealthy men), only to fall into the killer’s meticulously planned trap.
The initial police investigation quickly identified the prime suspect as 32-year-old Chinese national Ma Yanqing. Posing as an "affluent second-generation Shanghai man," he lured Yan Ruimin to Thailand for a trip, eventually killing her for her money before brutally dismembering and disposing of her body. The case caused an immediate uproar in both China and Thailand.
The victim, Yan Ruimin, was born in Shenzhen in 1996 and graduated with a degree in foreign trade. In 2018, she quit her job to start an e-commerce beauty business. Simultaneously, she meticulously crafted an image of a "self-made success story" on Xiaohongshu—showcasing fitness, cosmetic surgery, lavish spending, and teaching women how to "earn 100,000 yuan a month" and "catch a millionaire." Her glamorous persona attracted millions of followers who believed in her "inspiring" narrative. However, sources revealed that behind the facade was immense financial strain; her business had suffered losses of hundreds of thousands, forcing her to rely on high-interest loans and "sponsors" to maintain her luxurious image. By 2024, as her account's popularity waned, Yan Ruimin predictably began looking for new targets on high-end dating apps.
Meanwhile, the perpetrator, Ma Yanqing, was a 32-year-old man from Anhui with no fixed occupation, yet he possessed multiple passports, including those from Thailand and Hong Kong. He was a professional swindler, specializing in deceiving women for money. He had previously been arrested for fraud in China, released in 2023, and subsequently fled abroad.
In May 2024, Yan Ruimin connected with Ma Yanqing on a dating app. He presented himself as an "affluent Shanghai man born in the 1980s," with an annual income reportedly in the millions and interests in travel and investment—the perfect "prey." Ma Yanqing was highly skilled at flirtation, and Yan Ruimin was swayed by his apparent "sincerity," agreeing to meet him in Bangkok.
On June 30, the two arrived in Bangkok and quickly entered a "honeymoon" phase. Surveillance footage showed them happily holding hands and eating durian at a Bangkok night market on the evening of July 1st. However, the "sweetness" ended abruptly on July 2nd. Ma Yanqing rented a black SUV and drove Yan Ruimin to the remote Chonburi Province. By 3:00 AM on July 3rd, the vehicle was spotted near a secluded park in Ban Pho District before its signal was lost.
Subsequently, Yan Ruimin's whereabouts showed a bizarre anomaly: on July 5th, her phone location appeared in Macau. The phone was used for mobile payments to purchase durian, dumplings, and drinks, and over 30,000 yuan was transferred from her bank card. This was clearly the killer attempting to create a false trail and steal her assets.
On July 12th, realizing his daughter was missing, Yan's father anxiously flew to Bangkok, reporting her disappearance to the Royal Thai Police the next day. He provided her photo, fingerprints, and DNA samples, urging a quick intervention. The Bangkok police formed a special task force, reviewed airport and hotel surveillance, and quickly identified Ma Yanqing as the prime suspect.
On the morning of July 13th, the search operation resulted in the discovery of the remains in the pond. Initial forensic examination indicated Yan Ruimin died from a blunt force trauma to the head, with the time of death estimated around the early hours of July 3rd. Thai police confirmed it was a premeditated murder and described the suspect's methods as cruel and extremely dangerous.
The Thai Police immediately issued a Red Notice through Interpol, prompting a swift joint enforcement action between China and Thailand. The joint team located Ma Yanqing's hiding place in Macau. On July 18th, he was apprehended at a Macau casino while attempting to board a flight to Vietnam using a fake passport. In August 2024, Ma Yanqing was extradited to China for trial.
On November 25, 2025, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court convicted Ma Yanqing of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death with a two-year reprieve. Following the case, the Chinese police issued a warning: "Be cautious with online dating and avoid traveling alone overseas."
More than a year after the incident, the pond in Ban Pho District has returned to silence. Yet, this tragedy serves as a solemn reminder that beauty and ambition, which should be wings for flight, can sometimes, through greed and misplaced trust, become the staircase leading to the abyss.
