During the Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System) era, Hi no Tori: Houou-hen (Phoenix Chapter) was a highly acclaimed game, yet it never received any sequels. This was largely because it was adapted from Osamu Tezuka’s classic Phoenix series, specifically the “Phoenix Chapter,” which already presents a complete, cyclical story. The game was able to fully capture this narrative in a single installment. Combined with the market environment and technological limitations at the time, Konami chose to focus on perfecting this iconic work rather than rushing to develop multiple sequels.
From a game design perspective, Hi no Tori: Houou-hen was not just a straightforward action game. It incorporated puzzle-solving and strategic elements that aligned closely with the original themes of life, reincarnation, and human nature explored in the manga. The careful design likely led the development team to conclude that a single, well-executed adaptation was sufficient. Additionally, developing games for the Famicom in the 1980s came with high costs and technical constraints, making the successful adaptation of such a profound manga already an impressive achievement. Producing a sequel would have posed additional risks.
Licensing considerations also played a role. Phoenix is a major work of Osamu Tezuka, and adapting it once already required significant effort and resources. Any potential sequels would have involved negotiating licensing and cooperation with Tezuka Productions, which at the time may have been a limiting factor.

Many fans still hope to see remakes of the Phoenix series in either game or animation form.
