In the Pokémon anime series, Ash’s Gengar is often regarded by fans as one of the Pokémon with the most tragic background among all of his partners. This reputation does not stem merely from its origin, but from a long period of abandonment, emotional trauma, and, ultimately, redemption through understanding and acceptance. These elements make Gengar one of the most emotionally layered characters in Pokémon Journeys.
Gengar first appeared in episode 11 of Pokémon Journeys. Before meeting Ash, it already had a Trainer, but that Trainer blamed his own misfortune and failures on Gengar, believing it to be a bringer of bad luck. As a result, Gengar was abandoned in an old building connected to Professor Cerise’s laboratory. At first, it believed the separation was temporary, but what followed was an agonizing wait that lasted three full years. During that time, Gengar remained alone in the empty building, holding on to the hope that its Trainer would eventually return. When it finally realized that this would never happen, the sense of betrayal and rejection left deep scars. Losing trust in humans, Gengar began causing mischief and disturbances around the laboratory as a way to cope with its loneliness and pain.
Ash’s arrival marked a turning point in Gengar’s fate. Unlike its former Trainer, Ash did not reject it because of its pranks or eerie behavior. Instead, he tried to understand the emotions behind Gengar’s actions. In moments of danger, Ash chose to protect Gengar and fight alongside it, treating it as an equal partner without hesitation. This sincerity and trust gradually broke down the resentment and defensiveness Gengar had accumulated over the years. In the end, Gengar responded to Ash’s feelings and chose to join his team, completing its transformation from an abandoned Pokémon into one that was truly accepted.
From a battle perspective, this Gengar is equally significant. It is Ash’s first Ghost-type Pokémon to officially join his team, making up for the long-standing regret from the Kanto era, when Haunter never formally became a member. Gengar possesses a highly versatile moveset, skillfully using attacks such as Shadow Ball, Psychic, and Ice Punch, which allows it to adapt to a wide variety of opponents. Most notably, it is the only Pokémon on Ash’s team capable of Gigantamaxing. In the Galar region, Gengar successfully achieved its Gigantamax form, delivering not only overwhelming visual impact but also greatly enhancing the tactical depth and intensity of battles.
In the latter stages of Pokémon Journeys, particularly during the Masters Eight Tournament, Gengar experienced its defining moments. As a key member of the team that ultimately helped Ash become the World Champion, it repeatedly turned the tide in difficult situations and demonstrated world-class strength. Whether through steady performance against powerful opponents or stepping up in decisive moments, Gengar proved that it was no longer the Pokémon once dismissed as a symbol of misfortune, but a true champion-level partner worthy of the world stage.
In terms of basic attributes, this Gengar is a Ghost- and Poison-type Pokémon with the Ability Cursed Body. Personality-wise, it initially appeared withdrawn and mischievous, sometimes even hostile. After joining Ash, however, it became a reliable and humorous presence on the team. Although it still expresses affection through playful pranks, these actions are no longer driven by resentment, but by a desire to bond with its companions.
Overall, Ash’s Gengar evolves from an abandoned and rejected “victim” into a “champion Pokémon” that stands beside its Trainer at the pinnacle of the world. This journey—from loneliness to understanding, and from resentment to trust—not only adds depth to the character but also stands as one of the most touching and emotionally powerful storylines in Pokémon Journeys.
