Getting to Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market—more precisely, the Tsukiji Outer Market, which is what most visitors go to today—is very convenient, with the subway being the easiest and most efficient option. Whether it’s your first time in Tokyo or you’re already familiar with the city’s transport system, reaching Tsukiji is straightforward and requires minimal transfers or walking.

The most widely recommended route is to take the Toei Oedo Line and get off at Tsukiji Shijo Station. After exiting from Exit A1, you will almost immediately see signs for the market. It’s only about a one-minute walk to enter the outer market area, making this route especially ideal for travelers who want to arrive early in the morning for sushi or seafood bowls without wasting time or energy.

If you prefer using the Tokyo Metro, you can take the Hibiya Line to Tsukiji Station. From Exit 1 or Exit 2, follow the signs and walk south. You’ll pass the distinctive Tsukiji Hongwan-ji Temple along the way, and after about three to seven minutes on foot, you’ll reach the entrance to the outer market. Although this route involves slightly more walking, it’s easy to navigate and works well for visitors who also want to stop by the temple.

For those coming from Asakusa or Haneda Airport, the Toei Asakusa Line to Higashi-Ginza Station is another convenient option. From Exit A2 or A8, it’s about a five-minute walk to the Tsukiji Outer Market. This route is often paired with a Ginza shopping itinerary, allowing visitors to smoothly combine dining and shopping in one trip.

If you’re arriving via JR lines, the closest major station is Shimbashi Station. Walking from Shimbashi to Tsukiji takes around fifteen minutes and can be enjoyable for travelers who like strolling through city streets. Alternatively, you can transfer at Shimbashi to the Toei Oedo Line and ride just one stop to Tsukiji Shijo Station. Similarly, if you’re staying in the Ginza area, Tsukiji is only about a ten-minute walk away, making it easily accessible on foot.

When planning your visit, there are a few practical tips to keep in mind. The morning rush hour in Tokyo typically runs from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., during which trains can be very crowded. If you’re heading to Tsukiji early for breakfast, it’s best to go very early or slightly later to avoid the peak. Travelers coming directly from the airport should also plan their transfers in advance—for example, taking the Tokyo Monorail from Haneda Airport to Hamamatsucho, then transferring to the Toei Oedo Line, or using a limousine bus from Narita Airport to Ginza before continuing by subway or on foot.

One final but important reminder is to pay close attention to station names. Tsukiji Station and Tsukiji Shijo Station are different stops, though they are relatively close to each other. If convenience and efficiency are your priorities, Tsukiji Shijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line is generally the best choice for visiting the Tsukiji Outer Market. With a bit of advance planning, even first-time visitors can reach Tsukiji easily and fully enjoy its lively atmosphere and renowned food scene.
