On March 25, 2025, a 19-year-old female university student in Nanning, Guangxi (identified under the pseudonym “Lily”) reported to the police that her boyfriend (pseudonym “Niuniu”) had repeatedly forced her to engage in sexual acts and subjected her to severe humiliation during their relationship. Following an investigation, Niuniu was transferred for prosecution on suspicion of rape and forced insult. The case was formally handed over to the court for trial in January 2026 and has not yet gone to hearing.

The relationship between the two began in August 2024, when Lily met Niuniu, then a third-year university student, through a short-video platform. After frequent online conversations, they established a romantic relationship within a week and subsequently had sexual relations. According to Lily, the early stage of the relationship appeared harmonious, with no obvious conflicts.

The situation changed dramatically in March 2025. On March 16, Niuniu discovered that Lily had been chatting online with other male acquaintances. He reportedly became enraged and, under the pretext of “punishment,” subjected Lily to extreme humiliation and physical violence. Lily later stated that she complied out of fear, emotional dependence, and prolonged psychological pressure, believing that obedience was the only way to preserve the relationship.

From March 19 to March 25, the abuse escalated. Niuniu allegedly burned Lily’s arms, back, inner thighs, and chest with cigarette butts, and forcibly tattooed words on her arm symbolizing ownership and degradation. Prosecutors later concluded that these actions went far beyond ordinary relationship disputes and constituted serious violations of personal dignity and bodily integrity.

On the afternoon of March 25, after another sexual encounter, Lily experienced a complete emotional breakdown and decided to report the matter to the police, stating that the relationship had irreparably collapsed. During questioning, Niuniu claimed that all acts were consensual and part of a mutually agreed “SM relationship.” Lily, however, maintained that all sexual activity after March 16 occurred under violence, coercion, and fear, and was entirely against her will.

In terms of legal proceedings, Niuniu was formally arrested in April 2025. During the investigation, the Xixiangtang District People’s Procuratorate of Nanning twice returned the case to police for supplementary investigation. After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors added the charge of forced insult, determining that Niuniu had used violence and coercion to engage in sexual acts against the victim’s will while simultaneously subjecting her to serious humiliation. The prosecution held that the conduct constituted both rape and forced insult, warranting combined punishment.

Although Niuniu’s family paid Lily RMB 70,000 in compensation and obtained a criminal settlement letter, prosecutors concluded that the nature of the case was severe and involved significant harm to public legal interests. As a result, criminal responsibility continued to be pursued, and the case was transferred to the court for trial.

The central controversy in the case revolves around whether the acts were consensual and whether long-term psychological control and violence constituted coercion. Niuniu has consistently claimed that all behavior was voluntary within a romantic relationship, and his mother cited surveillance footage showing the couple interacting normally to challenge the rape allegations. Lily, on the other hand, stated that she had endured prolonged emotional manipulation, verbal degradation, and physical abuse, gradually losing the ability to resist. She reported the crimes only after learning that Niuniu had begun seeing another woman, which caused her emotional collapse and prompted her to seek help.

After reviewing medical reports, injury photographs, communication records, witness testimony, and the overall behavioral pattern, judicial authorities concluded that the evidence chain was complete. They determined that Niuniu’s actions met the legal criteria for using violence and coercion to insult a woman and engage in sexual activity against her will.

Beyond individual criminal liability, the case has sparked widespread public discussion about intimate partner violence, the boundaries of sexual consent, and the dangers of disguising coercion and control as “emotional relationships.”
