Germany does indeed have so-called “robot brothels,” and in recent years these establishments have entered a new phase through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). What began as venues offering realistic silicone dolls has gradually evolved into technology-driven spaces combining AI interaction, virtual reality, and immersive entertainment experiences. Among the most widely discussed examples is Cybrothel in Berlin, which gained international attention between 2024 and 2025 and has been described by some media outlets as one of the world’s first cyber-style adult venues to meaningfully incorporate AI technology.

The core concept behind these establishments is the fusion of highly realistic humanoid dolls with AI conversational systems, transforming the experience from passive interaction into something more dynamic and responsive. At Cybrothel, certain characters—such as the AI persona known as “Kokeshi”—are powered by specialized large language models capable of engaging in spoken conversations. These systems respond in real time to users’ voices, tone, and even touch-based inputs through embedded sensors, creating an experience designed to simulate companionship and interaction rather than simple physical engagement. Virtual reality technology is also integrated, allowing customers to enter digital environments where they can interact with virtual counterparts of the characters, effectively blending physical and virtual experiences. According to reporting by BBC and other international media, sessions are priced at roughly £228 per hour, positioning the service as a premium technology-focused entertainment offering.

Operationally, privacy and hygiene are emphasized as key selling points. Operators state that conversations and interactions are not recorded, addressing concerns about personal data security. After each session, dolls undergo strict sanitation procedures, including specialized cleaning and heat treatment processes intended to meet Germany’s public health standards. These measures also reflect an effort by operators to frame their businesses as regulated technological entertainment services rather than traditional prostitution venues.

Robot brothels are not entirely new in Germany. Their origins can be traced back several years, most notably to the opening of Bordoll in Dortmund in 2017, widely regarded as Germany’s first doll-based brothel. At the time, the venue offered more than a dozen lifelike silicone dolls with different appearances and personalities, marketing itself as a “pressure-free” environment aimed partly at individuals experiencing loneliness or social anxiety. As technology advanced, the industry gradually shifted from static dolls toward AI-enhanced interactive systems, shaping today’s emerging market.

The development of such businesses is closely tied to Germany’s legal framework. Prostitution is legal under regulated conditions in the country, and robot brothels are typically categorized as entertainment or rental services subject to hygiene, safety, and business regulations. This legal environment—combined with technological innovation—has allowed Germany to become one of the few places where such venues can operate openly.

Despite industry claims that AI robots provide a safe and judgment-free environment, the sector faces ongoing ethical debate. Supporters argue that AI companions may offer low-risk outlets for intimacy and potentially reduce certain social harms. Critics, however, warn that accommodating extreme fantasies through machines could reinforce unhealthy behavioral patterns or misogynistic attitudes. As AI systems increasingly simulate emotional responses, researchers and policymakers are beginning to question how human relationships and social norms may change when machines can imitate companionship.

Looking ahead, developers are working on next-generation sex robots capable of autonomous movement, simulated body warmth, and more advanced sensory feedback designed to replicate realistic physiological responses. These developments suggest that robot brothels are evolving beyond novelty businesses into a significant case study at the intersection of artificial intelligence, entertainment technology, and social ethics, raising broader questions about how technology may reshape human intimacy in the future.
