Dai Liu, an only child, had a heated argument with her father over her college application choices. Although her grades could have secured her a spot at her dream school, Peking University, her father unilaterally changed her application, forcing her to apply to other schools because he wanted her to become a civil servant.

To escape her father's control, Dai Liu secretly prepared an application to study abroad. When she informed her parents that she had been accepted and was planning to go abroad, her father flew into a rage and insisted that she stay in China. Ultimately, her mother, feeling sorry for her, secretly took her to the airport. The parents originally expected her to return home after graduation, but she later told them that she intended to settle abroad permanently. Heartbroken, her parents felt that all their efforts and sacrifices for their daughter had been in vain. She could not stay by their side, nor did they receive any eldercare benefits to support their lives. They lamented that their hope of relying on their daughter in their old age was completely shattered.
