Recently, a Chinese travel channel internet celebrity, "Serious Bald Zhang," attempted to enter Ukraine but was refused entry and deported back to Poland. This has raised questions about whether the local attitude towards Chinese people is genuinely unwelcoming.

The incident took place in mid-December 2023 when Serious Bald Zhang attempted to enter Ukraine and was rejected by the local customs. Customs claimed that the data in Kyiv indicated he should not be allowed entry and questioned whether he had a criminal record in the area. Three years ago, Serious Bald Zhang registered a company and obtained a visa through the company for himself. However, upon entering this time, he unexpectedly discovered that his residency card, which still had five months left before expiration, was forcibly confiscated, and he was sent back to Poland.

In a video, Serious Bald Zhang expressed his frustration and hinted at the possibility that his situation might be related to recent exposure by Odessa blogger Wang Jixian regarding anti-missile system videos, leading to accusations of espionage. Currently, the entry inspection for Chinese individuals has become particularly stringent in the area.

To uncover the truth, we interviewed Old Luo, a local resident for over four years. He mentioned that since 2023, the Ukrainian government has revised laws, and after company registration, revenue and tax reporting must be done through an accountant. In other words, companies not paying taxes may face deregistration.

Legally, everything seems to be in order. However, whether there is a special check for Chinese individuals varies from case to case. Old Luo mentioned that many of his Chinese friends who attempted to enter Ukraine recently faced difficulties. In one instance, out of four mainland Chinese, three were deported. The only successful entry was someone with an invitation letter for university admission, even though their previous white card had expired.

Another mainland friend attempted to cross the border three times without success. Later, hearing that entering Ukraine via train from Moldova might be easier, the friend successfully passed through customs. However, he was eventually stopped because of his three previous rejection records, and the fourth attempt ended in failure.

Old Luo emphasized that the current environment is no longer friendly to Chinese individuals. Customs has the absolute authority to refuse entry, especially if they discover past visits to Russia or Belarus or a change of passport. For those simply wishing to travel, it might be advisable to wait until after the war before considering a visit. Currently, Kyiv has been severely bombed for an extended period, and sometimes Old Luo faces stares or insults on the streets, but once outside Kyiv, the situation is not as severe.

Ukrainian men, in general, are not more extreme or violent than Russians or Belarusians. However, if visiting, it is essential to avoid disturbing or approaching women, and filming videos without care may lead to painful consequences such as being blacklisted in the community. Many people might point fingers or insult you every day when labeled negatively.
