Ko Wen-je Indicted for Corruption – Released on Bail After Four Months of Detention

After more than four months in detention, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office completed its investigation on December 26 into the Jinghua City Land Development Case and Political Donations Case, formally indicting former Taipei Mayor and Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Ko Wen-je on charges of bribery, profiteering, embezzlement, and breach of trust under the Anti-Corruption Act. Prosecutors accused Ko of accepting bribes and embezzling political donations, seeking a 28-year and 6-month prison sentence, along with a fine of NT$50 million and a 10-year suspension of civil rights.

In the early hours of December 27, the Taipei District Court ruled to release Ko on bail of NT$30 million, imposing several restrictions:

Travel restrictions – Ko is prohibited from leaving Taiwan or traveling overseas.

Residence restrictions – Ko cannot change his residence or leave his designated address without permission.

No contact with co-defendants or witnesses – To prevent collusion or interference with evidence.

Ko left the court around 1 PM on December 27 after posting bail. Upon returning home, he spoke to the media at his doorstep, expressing gratitude for the public’s support."I thank everyone for their encouragement. This is an opportunity given by heaven to reflect on my life."Ko revealed that he had read over 40 books during his detention and reiterated that he is not a person who would engage in corruption or profiteering. Despite the turmoil, he emphasized the importance of self-reflection and learning throughout life’s challenges.

In response to the court’s decision to grant bail, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office expressed dissatisfaction and announced plans to file an appeal. The case involves allegations concerning Ko Wen-je’s handling of the Jinghua City Land Development Project and political donations during his tenure as Taipei Mayor. Due to the significant financial interests and political sensitivity involved, the case has drawn widespread public attention since the investigation began.
