The 1992 Nanjing Female University Student Case: The Killer Caught 28 Years Later
On March 20, 1992, Lin, a female medical student at Nanjing Medical University, was brutally murdered while studying alone in a classroom building. That evening, the killer struck her head, rendering her unconscious, and then sexually assaulted her. In an even more heinous act, the killer pressed Lin, who was still barely alive, into a light well, causing her to suffocate to death. He subsequently hid her body in a sewer. Her remains were not discovered until four days later.
DNA evidence left in Lin’s body pointed to the perpetrator, but due to the technological limitations of the time, the case remained unsolved for many years despite substantial evidence. The Nanjing police screened over 15,000 people and continued investigating the case for over two decades. Shockingly, the killer, Ma Jigang, did not flee after the crime but instead lived just 5 kilometers from the crime scene.
A "Double Life" of Irony
Even more ironically, Ma lived a seemingly happy and prosperous life over the past 28 years. He married and had a daughter who is now in university. Ma even became a shareholder in a biotech company in Nanjing, accumulating significant wealth and earning a good reputation among his neighbors—a stark contrast to his cold-blooded and violent nature.
A Breakthrough Through DNA Technology
On February 19, 2020, the case saw a major breakthrough. The police discovered through a DNA comparison that a man named Ma from Pei County, Xuzhou, had DNA highly similar to that of the perpetrator in the 1992 Nanjing Medical University murder case. It was inferred that the killer might be one of Ma's relatives. Under the guise of a nucleic acid test, the police discreetly collected a buccal swab from Ma Jigang. DNA testing confirmed that Ma was indeed the perpetrator.
Soon after, the police arrested Ma at his home. Confronted with irrefutable evidence, he confessed to the rape and murder committed 28 years earlier.
Justice Delayed but Not Forgotten
Although the killer was finally brought to justice, Lin, who was only 22 years old, could never witness the resolution of the case. This tragic incident underscores the technological limitations of the past and prompts reflection on how modern advancements in science and resources can be more effectively leveraged to seek justice for victims and prevent such regrets from recurring.
