Rastan Saga II (ラスタンサーガII), localized in Western arcades as Nastar or Nastar Warrior, is a 2D side-scrolling hack-and-slash arcade sequel developed and published by the industry giants at Taito in 1988 for the Taito B System hardware. Serving as the direct successor to the 1987 barbarian smash-hit Rastan Saga, this entry pivoted drastically in terms of both its visual blueprint and system design. By dramatically increasing the screen scale of the pixel sprites and completely overhauling the defensive tactical framework, Rastan Saga II carved out a highly experimental, heavy-set niche in the franchise’s history.
The narrative functions as a prequel to the original epic, traveling hundreds of years back into the primordial timeline of the barbarian wastes. The conflict centers around a sacred sanctuary known as "Moria," where a colossal tower engineered to bridge Earth and Heaven, the "Great Celestial Tower" (Rastania), pierces the clouds. Seeking to usurp its divine authority, an army of grotesque demon royalty invades and fortifies the spire. To protect the holy cradle and prevent the underworld from absorbing the mortal plane, a youthful Rastan shoulders his blade once more. He must fight across booby-trapped ancient ruins, molten dungeons, and clockwork machine nests to eliminate the corruption waiting at the apex of the tower.
Mechanically, Rastan Saga II executed bold, uncompromising system changes that set it sharply apart from its predecessor:
-
Visually Striking "Giant Sprites" & Technical Hitboxes: The most immediate transformation is the scaling of the sprites; Rastan and his enemies are rendered nearly twice the size of the original character models. This massive scaling delivers intense visual weight and screen-filling presence with every swing of steel. However, it shifts the gameplay loop from the fluid, high-mobility platforming of the first game into a deliberate, tight, space-calculated style of engagement.
-
The Strategic Shield Guard & Heavy Armaments: The shield, which acted as a passive item drop in the original, was elevated to a core tactical mechanic. Retaining a streamlined two-button layout (Attack and Jump), pressing Down on the joystick causes Rastan to raise his left Shield into an absolute guarding state, completely negating standard incoming front-facing projectiles, flying axes, and magical spheres. For offense, Rastan spawns with a balanced Broadsword, but breaking specific containers allows him to swap to dual-wielded Claws or a massive Battle Axe—weapons that sacrifice swing speed for devastating armor-crushing hitboxes.
-
Kaiju-Scale & Grotesque Threat Matrix: Due to the amplified sprite size, the boss encounters carry the dramatic scale of classic Japanese tokusatsu films. Players face colossal tier-bosses that command massive portions of the screen, including a predatory marine plant-beast whipping multi-segmented tentacles, a three-headed golden Chimera breathing continuous waves of fire, and a dual-blade-wielding heavily armored Demon Emperor.
Aesthetically, Rastan Saga II showcases Taito's late-80s experimentation with high-contrast color palettes. Diverging from the desolate, low-saturation realism of the original, the sequel features vibrant, highly saturated tones. The backdrops are lined with cryptic ancient reliefs, grinding bronze gear assemblies, and hallucinatory starry skies, creating a surrealist dark fantasy atmosphere.
On the audio front, Taito's legendary in-house band Zuntata (with Masahiko Takaki continuing to lead the arrangement) returned to score the adventure. While the soundtrack bypassed the Celtic folk-rock themes of the original, Zuntata delivered an incredibly progressive, avant-garde arrangement. Driven by industrial synthesizers, heavy electronic percussion, and ominous, rhythmic vocal chants, the score masterfully channels the twisted, sacred, and oppressive ambiance of a corrupted celestial temple.
Upon its 1988 debut, Rastan Saga II polarized certain core arcade veterans who missed the nimble jump mechanics of the first game. Nevertheless, its unique active shield-guarding meta, towering pixel execution, and cutting-edge Zuntata audio engineering cement it as an unforgettable, fiercely independent cult milestone of the late-80s arcade golden age.
