Taito released Kyonshiizu 2 for the Nintendo Famicom on September 25, 1987. Despite being labeled as a “2,” it was actually the first—and only—full-fledged RPG in the series for the Famicom. The game is a unique creation by a Japanese developer, based on the Taiwanese zombie film Kyonshiizu (Hello Zombie) and its subsequent series, heavily infused with Taoist folklore and supernatural elements.
Kyonshiizu 2 is a first-person, magic-based RPG with exploration at its core. Town navigation uses a traditional top-down view, but entering buildings or dungeons switches to a first-person 3D perspective reminiscent of Wizardry or Shin Megami Tensei, while battles are displayed in dynamic side-view duels. Players can control iconic characters from the films, such as the playful Xigua Pi, the sweet Tiantian, the mischievous Xiao Hei, and the spirit-guiding Master Jin. The soundtrack features Chinese-inspired electronic melodies, with combat music emphasizing rapid percussion that evokes the chaotic “human versus zombie” battles from the films.
The plot closely follows the tone of the movies. The evil Zombie King has risen and is leading hordes of small zombies to attack villages, abducting companions along the way. Players take on the role of Master Jin, guiding the children through mystical Chinese villages, forests, wastelands, and eerie caves. The ultimate goal is to gather legendary talismans, infiltrate the Zombie King’s lair, and engage in a climactic battle to rescue their friends and purify the land.
Gameplay revolves around meticulous resource management and strategic command use. Exploration of the first-person dungeons demands a strong sense of direction or map-making skills, as traps and repetitive-looking walls can easily lead to disorientation. Combat is turn-based and emphasizes the proper use of Taoist tools and spells: talismans to halt zombie actions, ink lines and bells to weaken or control enemies, and glutinous rice to cure “zombification” when a character is injured. Players must train in villages to level up, with an especially steep difficulty curve in the early game. Tiantian, in particular, is a high-magic-potential character, often used as a powerful support unit.
The game received mixed but memorable reviews. Critics and players praised its unique East Asian aesthetic and faithful recreation of Taiwanese zombie folklore, from talismans to Taoist rituals, while also noting its punishing difficulty. The first-person dungeons, combined with the zombification mechanics, made the game nearly impossible to complete without careful planning or consulting a guide.
Historically, Kyonshiizu 2 represents the peak of the 1980s zombie craze in video games. It successfully transformed a slapstick horror film into a deep RPG experience. Many nostalgic players still recall the thrill of turning a corner in a shadowy 3D maze to suddenly encounter a zombie in official robes with outstretched hands, or the frantic rush to find an exit while curing Xigua Pi’s zombification.
