與前作不同,《西遊記世界2:天上界的魔神》推出時,完全擺脫《神奇男孩》的框架,由 JALECO 全面原創開發。續作在視覺表現與玩法邏輯上都進行顯著升級,從前作的「動作角色扮演」轉向節奏更明快、更純粹的「橫向捲軸動作遊戲」。
於 1990 年 12 月 7 日在日本正式發售,後來北美以《Whomp 'Em》的名稱推出,但美版將主角孫悟空改為美洲原住民小勇士以符合市場需求。由於發行於紅白機末期,開發團隊充分壓榨主機性能,使畫面精細度與動態效果遠超同期作品。
遊戲劇情講述天上界突然出現強大的魔神,奪走具神奇力量的「如意聖印」,導致天界與人間陷入混亂。孫悟空再次受到召喚,必須穿梭六個風格迥異的世界,包括冰原、森林、火山以及如極樂世界的雲端空間。目標是擊敗各地魔神部下,收回聖印碎片,最終前往天上界深處挑戰黑暗勢力的源頭。
操作上,依然以金箍棒作為主要武器。除了左右揮動與跳躍,新增「全方位打擊」系統:可向上突刺或跳躍後向下重壓,對空中敵人及下方障礙非常有效。還引入類似《洛克人》的關卡選擇與技能獲取系統。可自由挑戰六個初始關卡,擊敗關卡頭目後即可獲得新術法或武器變化,例如遠程火球術、冰凍術或防禦屏障。要觀察各關卡特性,規劃最佳闖關順序。

Unlike its predecessor, Saiyuuki World 2: Tenjōkai no Majin (released in 1990) completely abandoned the Wonder Boy framework and was fully developed as an original title by JALECO. The sequel represented a significant evolution in both visual presentation and gameplay logic, shifting from the “action RPG” style of the first game to a faster-paced, pure side-scrolling action format.
The game was officially released in Japan on December 7, 1990, and later appeared in North America under the name Whomp ’Em, with the protagonist changed from Sun Wukong to a Native American warrior to better appeal to the local market. Being a late-era Famicom release, the development team maximized the console’s hardware capabilities, delivering graphics and dynamic effects far beyond most contemporary titles.
The story centers on a powerful demon appearing in the Celestial Realm, stealing the magical “Ruyi Seal” and plunging both the heavens and the human world into chaos. Sun Wukong is summoned once again to travel through six distinct worlds—including icy plains, forests, volcanoes, and cloud realms reminiscent of paradise—to defeat regional demon guardians, reclaim the seal fragments, and ultimately confront the source of the dark power in the Celestial Realm.
Gameplay revolves around Sun Wukong wielding his staff. In addition to basic horizontal swings and jumping, the sequel introduces a unique “multi-directional strike” system, allowing players to stab upward or slam downward after jumping, which is highly effective against aerial enemies and ground hazards. The game also implements a level-select and skill-acquisition system similar to Mega Man: players can tackle six initial stages in any order, and defeating each boss grants a new ability or weapon variation, such as ranged fireball attacks, freezing spells, or defensive barriers. Strategic observation of each stage is essential to determine the optimal order for progression.
Saiyuuki World 2 received high praise among players and is regarded as one of the pinnacle action games on the Famicom. While it removed the RPG equipment and shop mechanics of the first game, its diverse level design, fluid controls, and satisfying combat fully compensate for the simplification. The game’s difficulty is moderate, with a “maximum health upgrade” system encouraging exploration of hidden areas. For veteran players, the title not only demonstrates JALECO’s creative capabilities but also offers extensive replay value through its varied skill combinations, making it a standout side-scrolling experience at the end of the Famicom era.
