Tokyo Underground Killer is a first-person action game developed by Phoenix Game Productions and published by 3DM Games and Gone Shootin, set to launch on September 5, 2025, on Steam. Set in a near-future Tokyo where neon-lit cityscapes collide with a violent criminal underworld, the game tells a blood-soaked, fast-paced, and stylized tale of an assassin. Players take on the role of Kobayashi, a vampire hitman who wields the power of blood as a weapon. To survive the lawless underground society overrun by gangsters and the undead, he must carve a path of destruction through the brutal Flatliners gang and ultimately rewrite the city’s fate with blood.
The narrative atmosphere blends cyberpunk aesthetics with gothic horror. Known as the “Shinjuku Vampire,” Kobayashi is both an urban legend and a nightmare haunting the city’s darkest corners. He prowls iconic Tokyo districts such as Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Shibuya, facing hordes of demonic undead and ruthless gang enforcers. The story also features a strong manga influence, with over 80 pages of illustrated content created by comic artist Hans Steinbach (pen name: Heavy Metal Hanzo), giving the game a unique hybrid style that feels like both a video game and an underground comic book.
Gameplay centers around blade combat and the blood technique system. Kobayashi’s primary weapon, the katana “Jumokuji,” allows for thrusts, slashes, and swift evasive maneuvers, enhanced by his vampiric powers to decimate foes. Combat is lightning-fast, requiring players to weave through enemy swarms to execute assassinations and finishers. Defeated enemies provide blood, which restores health and refills the blood arts meter, unlocking over a dozen unique abilities. Alongside melee combat, players can wield seven firearms and thirteen special powers, enabling seamless transitions between brutal swordplay and high-caliber gunfights, amplifying the game’s visceral intensity.
Beyond the carnage, Tokyo Underground Killer also embraces a slice-of-life urban experience. Between missions, players can return to Kobayashi’s Shinjuku apartment, rest, and immerse themselves in Tokyo’s vibrant street culture. Activities include working part-time jobs, shopping, capsule toy hunting, or playing claw machines. Collectibles such as idol merchandise, band posters, figures, and records can be displayed, offering a contrast of lighthearted customization against the backdrop of blood-soaked violence.
Since its reveal, the game has generated significant buzz. Its fusion of vampire lore with cyberpunk visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 4, makes it stand out in the first-person action genre.
