Released by Takara on August 28, 1987 for the Nintendo Famicom, Transformers: The Headmasters (トランスフォーマー ザ・ヘッドマスターズ) is a side-scrolling action game based on the classic anime of the same name.
Compared to its predecessor, Transformers: Convoy no Nazo—notorious for being one of the most frustratingly difficult and poorly balanced games on the system—this sequel shows clear improvements in both visuals and gameplay systems, while still maintaining a high level of challenge.
Technically, the game attempts to recreate the signature “Headmaster” concept from the anime, where smaller robots transform into the heads of larger bodies. The visuals are more colorful and refined than before, and players can choose from four Autobots: Fortress, Hardhead, Chromedome, and Highbrow. The stages span multiple planets, including Earth, Mars, and Cybertron, giving the game a broader sci-fi scope. The soundtrack also incorporates melodies inspired by the anime’s theme, adding a sense of familiarity and excitement for fans.
The story follows the events of the anime, set after the death of Optimus Prime. A new generation of Headmasters rises to lead the Autobots against the Decepticons, now commanded by Galvatron. As the Decepticons wage war across the galaxy in search of energy and domination, players must take control of the four Headmasters and travel between planets to stop their plans. The ultimate goal is to infiltrate the enemy’s stronghold and defeat their leader, securing peace for the galaxy.
In terms of gameplay, the title builds upon traditional side-scrolling mechanics while introducing several strategic elements. Players can transform at any time between robot form and vehicle form—such as tanks, cars, or helicopters. Vehicle mode offers faster movement but limits attack direction, making it situationally useful. Additionally, the game features a character-switching system, allowing players to select different Headmasters before stages or at certain points. Each character has unique stats like speed, firepower, and defense, and if one falls in battle, the remaining characters can continue, adding a layer of tactical flexibility.
One of the most distinctive mechanics is the “Head-On” system. When a character’s HP drops below a certain threshold, the head unit detaches, leaving the player controlling a much smaller and significantly weaker form. In this state, survival becomes extremely difficult, and players must quickly find energy recovery or carefully navigate dangerous areas. This mechanic creates intense, high-risk moments that define the game’s tension.
The game also diversifies its gameplay by including segments beyond standard side-scrolling, such as vertical shooting stages and boss encounters, which help keep the experience varied.
Critically, Transformers: The Headmasters was seen as a significant improvement over its predecessor. While still criticized for strict collision detection and fast enemy respawns, it was considered far more playable and enjoyable. For fans, the ability to control their favorite transforming robots from the toy line on screen was a major appeal.
Historically, the game stands as an important example of 1980s “toy tie-in” titles, demonstrating how complex transformation concepts could be translated into relatively simple gameplay mechanics. While it may not be a mainstream classic, it remains a memorable entry for both Transformers fans and retro action game enthusiasts.
One of the most unforgettable moments comes when you’re crossing a dangerous lava field, only to be knocked into head form mid-jump—suddenly controlling a tiny, fragile unit desperately trying to survive. That kind of tension perfectly captures the spirit of the game. Do you remember how long you wandered through Cybertron’s trap-filled maze just to finally reach the ending?
