1987年8月28日在任天堂磁碟機(FDS)發行的《惡魔城II 詛咒的封印/德古拉II 詛咒的封印》(ドラキュラII 呪いの封印/Castlevania II: Simon's Quest),是該平台的第一款動作冒險遊戲。由科拿米負責製作及發行,1988年12月1日移植到北美NES平台,採用卡帶形式販售。其他移植的平台有2002年11月16日北美PC版、2007年10月28日的日本Wii Virtual Console、2013年3月24日日本的3DS Virtual Console、2014年1月16日北美的Wii Virutal Console。 

登場的主角是西蒙·貝爾蒙多(Simon Balmont),時間設定在初代故事結束的七年後,即西元1698年。當時打倒德古拉的時候,西蒙背部受重傷,在墓地偶遇一名女子,告知他已被下詛咒,這時候性命已經危在旦夕,需要親自銷毀德古拉的屍體。但他的殘骸已經分成五部分,散落在各地,於是要搜集到所有的遺骸,並帶到惡魔城的廢墟中,復活後再次打倒他才能解除詛咒。 

主要經過的城鎮有Jova、Veros、Aljiba、Aldra、Oldon、Fetra、Ghulash,沿路要解救當地居民外,另一任務是持續尋找隱藏的德古拉身體部位,位在五個黑暗莊園,分別是Berkeley、Rover、Brahm's Mansion(需要擊敗德古拉的部下"死神")、Bodley、Laruba Mansion(頭目是吸血鬼卡蜜拉Carmilla)。當西蒙拿到所有部位準備銷毀的時候,德古拉透過第六個殘骸 "德古拉之牙"的力量,讓他的鬼魂再次現身,於是兩人的命運對決再次展開。 

遊戲跟前作最大的差別在於RPG的設計概念,首先是升級系統,打敗敵人取得的紅心除可以購買道具,累積一定數量後也能增加經驗值升級,並增加血格的欄位。遊戲的bug是升級後有一段時間取得紅心,並不會增加任何經驗值,需要取得一定數量的心或是經過一些時間後,經驗值才會開始增加。想要鞭子的威力提升,需要在特定的地點向商人購買新鞭子,最強狀態是火焰。

副武器部分保留前作的匕首跟聖水,匕首可以穿刺一群敵人,攻擊力強。有一些隱藏的地道或陷阱,需要丟擲聖水才會發現。這兩種武器在一開始就可以購買入手。新增武器則有無敵桂冠(可以在毒沼澤一定的時間內呈現無敵)跟可透過圍牆反彈攻擊的鑽石,德古拉遺骸都有一些特殊能力例如避免中毒,德古拉肋骨可以變成盾牌來抵擋來自敵人的彈射攻擊。取得五個身體部位即魔法十字就能清除惡魔城附近的障礙,直接挑戰最終頭目。

另一個不同是遊玩的時間記錄,有分成天數(Days)、小時(Hours)、分鐘(Mininutes) ,遊玩時間的長短會影響全破時候的結局。在白天的時候,村民會出現並提供情報,部分內容有假。在晚上村民會消失,即使在城鎮也會出現殭屍 ,教堂及建物都無法進入。當白天進入教堂或其他建物內,時間不會被計算。白天是從早上六點開始持續到晚上的六點,這時候夜晚就會降臨,持續到早上的六點,晚上敵人的攻擊力較強,需特別注意。再來就是開放世界,可以讓玩家們自由的在各地遊蕩,但部分地方仍需要取得特定道具才能到達。

遊戲總共有三種不同的結局,第一種是超過15天以上全破,西蒙跟德古拉都沒有在戰鬥中活下來,只會出現德古拉的墳墓,上面的全文是: 

"The battle has consummated. Now peace and serenity have been restored to Transylvania and the people are free of Dracula's curse forever. And you, Simon Belmont, will always be remembered for your bravery and courage." 

"戰鬥已經終結,現在和平已經重返外西凡尼亞(Transylvania:現今羅馬尼亞的中西部),人們已經成功的永遠擺脫德古拉的詛咒。而你~西蒙·貝爾蒙多(Simon Balmont),你的勇敢跟勇氣將永遠被世人所銘記。"

第二種是在8~14天內全破,就會出現正常的結局。

Released on August 28, 1987, on the Nintendo Disk System (FDS), "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" (ドラキュラII 呪いの封印/Dracula II: The Seal of the Curse) is the first action-adventure game for the platform. Developed and published by Konami, it was ported to the North American NES on December 1, 1988, in cartridge form. Other platforms include the North American PC version on November 16, 2002, the Japanese Wii Virtual Console on October 28, 2007, the Japanese 3DS Virtual Console on March 24, 2013, and the North American Wii Virtual Console on January 16, 2014.

 

Game Plot and Setting

The protagonist is Simon Belmont, set seven years after the events of the original story in 1698. After defeating Dracula, Simon sustains a severe injury to his back and encounters a woman in a cemetery who informs him that he is cursed and his life is in danger. To break the curse, Simon must destroy Dracula's remains, which are scattered in five parts across different locations. He must collect all the relics and take them to the ruins of Castlevania to revive and defeat Dracula again.

Towns and Mansions

Simon travels through various towns such as Jova, Veros, Aljiba, Aldra, Oldon, Fetra, and Ghulash, where he helps local residents and searches for Dracula's body parts hidden in five dark mansions: Berkeley, Rover, Brahm's Mansion (guarded by Death, Dracula's servant), Bodley, and Laruba Mansion (guarded by the vampire Carmilla). Upon gathering all the relics, Dracula's spirit reappears through the power of the sixth relic, "Dracula's Fang," leading to the final showdown.

Gameplay Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor, "Simon’s Quest" incorporates RPG elements, such as:

Leveling System: Defeating enemies earns hearts, which can be used to buy items and accumulate experience points to level up, increasing the health bar. A bug in the game prevents experience gain for a period after leveling up.

Weapons: Upgrading the whip's power requires purchasing new whips from merchants, with the strongest being the flame whip.

Sub-Weapons: Includes the dagger and holy water from the previous game, with added items like the laurel (grants temporary invincibility) and the diamond (bounces off walls). Each of Dracula’s relics provides unique abilities, such as poison immunity and using Dracula’s rib as a shield.

Time and NPC Interactions

The game tracks playtime in days, hours, and minutes, impacting the ending. During the day, villagers provide information (some of which is false), while at night, they disappear, and zombies appear in towns. Churches and buildings are inaccessible at night. Time progresses from 6 AM to 6 PM (day) and 6 PM to 6 AM (night), with stronger enemies appearing at night.

Open World and Exploration

The game allows players to explore freely but requires specific items to access certain areas. Key features include:

Saving: Must be done in town shops, requiring manual recording after defeating major enemies.

Map Navigation: Some hidden paths and traps are revealed using holy water.

Items: Various items like resurrection elixirs (revive dead characters) and transportation items (move to different town gates) aid progression.

Endings

The game offers three different endings based on the completion time:

Worst Ending (15+ days): Simon and Dracula do not survive the final battle, and only Dracula's grave is shown with the inscription: "The battle has consummated. Now peace and serenity have been restored to Transylvania and the people are free of Dracula's curse forever. And you, Simon Belmont, will always be remembered for your bravery and courage."

Normal Ending (8-14 days): A typical resolution of the game’s plot.

Conclusion

"Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest" stands out for its innovative RPG elements and open-world exploration compared to the original game. Despite some bugs and the challenge of finding hidden items without a guide, its fluid interface and familiar historical figures made it a memorable entry in the series. The game deviates from historical accuracy, presenting a unique version of the Castlevania saga that resonates with many fans.
