Historically, Benkei Musashibou, during Japan's Heian period, was a military commander who frequently engaged in martial arts competitions in his youth. Following victories, he would collect the opponent's katana, amassing a total of 999. Later, he pledged allegiance to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the younger brother of the warlord Minamoto no Yoritomo. After the defeat of the Taira clan, Yoshitsune became the target of their older brother's pursuit, leading Benkei to steadfastly protect him. Unfortunately, he ultimately succumbed to a barrage of merciless arrows. His loyal samurai spirit continues to be revered by later generations.

The game's narrative unfolds in ancient Japan, during the peaceful Kamakura period that followed years of warfare. However, many monsters have emerged. The monk Hogen and his disciple Kijimaro at the Rinshoji Temple have been diligently training, preparing to confront these supernatural creatures. Years later, someone informs Hogen that a woman named Kogiku has been kidnapped by a mysterious wizard, setting the stage for the game's story.

Key characters in the game include Kijimaro, Saburo, Sayaka, and Benkei, with the option to have three save files. Basic commands include:

Talk: Engage in conversation with others, conduct buying and selling transactions, or gather information.

Power: Check the statistical data of team members.

Equip: Equip weapons or armor, which can be used or discarded.

Spells: Use during battles or movement for attacks, movement, or defensive effects.

Items: Use or discard items.

Investigate: Check suspicious areas or open treasure chests.

Pressing II displays the status of the party, and pressing it again hides the information. Choosing Select reveals the current lineup, allowing the player to select characters for swapping. After selecting the desired characters, pressing I confirms the swap.

The game is imbued with a strong Eastern flavor, with numerous Chinese characters used in commands and storyline, making it easily accessible to players of that era.
