The Langfang Village Matricide and Cannibalism Case: A Bloody Revenge of an "Honest Man"

In October 2006, a horrific crime shocked the nation in Liyuan Village, Langfang City, Hebei Province. With its exceptionally cruel methods and twisted psychological motives, this case became one of the most appalling family tragedies in China's criminal history.

The Sinister Lunch

At noon on the day of the crime, Lin Xiuying was preparing lunch at home when she received an unexpected visitor—her son-in-law, Bai, whom she had always looked down upon. This son-in-law, who usually never visited on his own, now handed her a lunchbox with an eerie smile, claiming it was stewed meat specially prepared by her daughter for her. Despite feeling puzzled by his strange behavior, Lin Xiuying, trusting her daughter, ate the meat, which was "reddish in color, rough in texture, and had a sour taste."

During her afternoon nap, Lin Xiuying kept hearing her daughter’s desperate cries in a half-awake state. A sense of foreboding made her immediately call her daughter, only to hear Bai repeatedly asking on the other end of the line, "Was the stew delicious?" When he finally said, "That was your own daughter’s flesh," the mother collapsed on the spot.

The Bloody Crime Scene

At first, the police suspected this was just a cruel marital prank. But at Lin Xiuying’s insistence, they went to Bai’s home to investigate. What they saw horrified even the most seasoned detectives: Bai’s wife had been brutally dismembered, her skin peeled off, and parts of her flesh missing—precisely what Lin Xiuying had eaten for lunch. Even more horrifying, Bai had distributed the "stew" to several villagers.

The Roots of Hatred

The investigation revealed a more complex truth behind this matricide and cannibalism case. Bai had long suffered abuse and public humiliation from his wife, Wang, and their marriage had long been broken. Before the crime, Bai discovered that his wife was having an affair with another man in the village. After being publicly beaten by his rival and thrown into a sewage ditch, this "honest man" finally snapped and meticulously planned his bloody revenge.

First, Bai lured his wife’s lover to his home under the pretense of negotiation. He then tortured him to death in an extremely brutal manner—first castrating him with a knife, stabbing him over 30 times, and finally hanging his severed head in the living room. Next, he killed his wife in the same way, mutilating her body in unspeakable ways—cutting off her breasts, disfiguring her face with a hot iron, and sewing her skin into a doll. Finally, he cooked his wife’s flesh and served it to his mother-in-law, completing his twisted revenge ritual.

Trial and Reflection

In court, Bai remained eerily calm upon receiving the death sentence, even apologizing to his in-laws. This case exposed multiple societal issues: domestic violence, psychological repression, a culture of revenge, and the long-term bullying of "honest people." As one investigator noted, "When a person is pushed to the brink, they may unleash unimaginable destructive force." Bai was ultimately sentenced to death.

This case is not just a criminal act but a grim allegory about the darkest aspects of human nature. It serves as a warning: society must establish more effective psychological intervention mechanisms to address pent-up negative emotions. At the same time, any form of bullying may plant the seeds of unforeseeable danger.
