Recently, a warning has been circulating in China about two mobile applications named "Douyin Meeting" and "UnionPay Meeting", which have been identified as scam apps. Although their names suggest affiliation with legitimate and well-known brands—Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) and China UnionPay—these apps are not officially developed by those companies. Instead, they are fraudulent applications created by criminals who exploit the public’s trust in these brands to carry out scams.

According to reports from victims, these apps are typically promoted under the guise of job offers, part-time tasks (such as paid online "order brushing"), or remote meetings to entice users to download them. Once installed, the apps prompt users to input personal information and may even instruct them to perform "test payments" or "identity verification." If users provide bank card details or link third-party payment accounts, the scammers can then steal funds in the background—or even remotely control the victim’s phone. In some cases, the apps have been found to contain Trojan viruses, enabling them to access contacts, text messages, and even eavesdrop on phone calls without user consent.

Beyond "Douyin Meeting" and "UnionPay Meeting," numerous similar scam apps have emerged in China in recent years—particularly on unofficial app platforms. Many of these malicious apps impersonate financial institutions, government agencies, or well-known companies. For example, some fake apps claim to be from the National Anti-Fraud Center, tricking users into providing personal details under the pretense of "fraud investigation." Others impersonate services like the WeChat Security Center or Alipay Risk Control Department, sending fake security alerts that direct users to download phishing software. There are also counterfeit versions of logistics platforms, job recruitment apps, investment platforms, and even entirely fabricated e-commerce services, all designed to mislead users into believing they are official partners.

These scam apps are often spread through WeChat groups, QQ groups, or SMS messages containing download links. Some are hosted on unauthorized websites, such as pirated software platforms or online forums. Users who are not particularly vigilant can easily fall victim.

To prevent falling for such scams, the most fundamental rule is to never download apps from unofficial sources. Any app related to finance, identity verification, or job recruitment should be downloaded only from official app stores such as the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or the official marketplaces of Xiaomi, Huawei, or OPPO. Additionally, if an app name appears very similar to a well-known organization but cannot be found in official stores, it is most likely a fake. Government agencies and major companies generally do not require users to install third-party apps for communication or transactions. If you are asked to download an app for a "meeting" or "verification," you should treat it with extreme caution.

China’s Public Security Bureau and the National Anti-Fraud Center continue to crack down on the spread of such fraudulent apps. Citizens are also encouraged to install the official National Anti-Fraud Center App, developed by law enforcement, which can help identify suspicious apps and report them.

In conclusion, "Douyin Meeting" and "UnionPay Meeting" are not affiliated with any legitimate organization. They are tools designed to exploit user trust for fraudulent purposes. Do not download or install these apps. If you have already installed one and submitted sensitive information, you should report it to the police immediately, unlink any connected financial accounts, and change all related passwords. Most importantly, share this warning with family and friends, especially elderly individuals or those less familiar with mobile technology, to prevent them from becoming the next targets of these scams.
