According to reports from mainland Chinese media, a year after the death of Zong Qinghou, internal disputes within his family have gradually surfaced. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the public's long-standing understanding of the Zong family has merely scratched the surface. Once portrayed as a man of integrity under the label of "one wife, one daughter, and a pair of cloth shoes," Zong’s image now contrasts sharply with the more intricate and tangled history that is coming to light.

As early as 2018, while the Zong family was compiling a chronicle of Zong Qinghou’s father, it was confirmed that in addition to his well-known eldest daughter Zong Fuli, Zong Qinghou actually had six more children. These details had remained private for years and only recently began to emerge. Reports state that Zong fathered three children with Wahaha co-founder Du Jianying: Zong Jichang (born in 1996), Zong Jieli (born in 1998), and a third child named Zong Jisheng, whose exact birth year has yet to be verified. Prior to his relationship with Du Jianying, Zong reportedly had a daughter with a female employee during his earlier years; the mother and daughter later settled in the United States. Another child, said to be born in 2017, was allegedly fathered with a different, younger female employee. Furthermore, there is reportedly one additional child whose identity has not yet been made public.

Within the Zong family, these complex family arrangements have long been a source of internal controversy. It is said that in 2009, Zong Qinghou’s father had hoped to formally include Du Jianying’s son, Zong Jichang, in the family genealogy. However, the plan was ultimately abandoned due to concerns over the family’s public image. Around the year 2000, Zong divorced his first wife Shi Youzhen, the mother of Zong Fuli. He later legally married Du Jianying around 2005, though that marriage also eventually ended in divorce.

Insiders further revealed that during her upbringing, Zong Fuli strongly resented the family’s instability. At one point, she even went on a hunger strike to pressure her father into compromising on matters of family affairs. This action highlights her determination and sensitivity, particularly regarding inheritance and control over the family’s business empire.

Today, a year after Zong Qinghou’s passing, disputes over his estate have escalated into legal proceedings. Three individuals claiming to be Zong Fuli’s half-siblings have filed lawsuits in both Hong Kong and Hangzhou, demanding clarification on the handling of trust funds and calling for the division and inheritance of the 29.4% equity in Wahaha Group currently held under Zong Fuli’s name. This inheritance battle has not only shattered the Zong family’s long-cultivated image of unity and simplicity but has also thrust Wahaha—a long-standing and iconic Chinese company—back into the spotlight of both public scrutiny and legal contention.
