In modern society, beverages have become an integral part of daily life for many people. Sweet drinks such as bubble tea, fruit juice, and icy treats are particularly popular among the younger generation. Many people are accustomed to cooling off with a cup of iced milk tea, replacing plain water with juice, or using sugary drinks as a form of emotional comfort. However, over time, these seemingly harmless and even enjoyable habits can gradually cause significant harm to the human body.
Take milk tea as an example. In addition to tea, most commercially available milk teas contain large amounts of sugar, non-dairy creamer, and add-ins like tapioca pearls. Non-dairy creamer is not real milk but rather a powdered product high in trans fats. Trans fats are difficult for the body to metabolize and can increase levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) while reducing good cholesterol (HDL). Long-term consumption can lead to arterial hardening, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and fatty liver. Furthermore, toppings like tapioca pearls and coconut jelly are mostly made of starch and sugar, offering high calories with little nutritional value. Frequent consumption can disrupt insulin secretion and increase the risk of diabetes.
Next, consider fruit juices, especially those labeled as "from concentrate" or containing added sugar. While they may be marketed as "natural" and "vitamin-rich," these juices are often reconstituted from concentrate and enhanced with added sugars and flavorings, losing the fiber and natural nutrients of the original fruit. Not only do they fail to provide the same health benefits as whole fruits, but their high sugar content can also cause rapid blood sugar spikes and promote fat accumulation. Even freshly squeezed juices, once filtered to remove pulp, lack fiber and are easy to overconsume, leading to an excessive calorie intake.
Icy desserts pose another common issue. Whether it’s slushies, ice cream, or chilled beverages, these treats are often high in sugar and fat to improve taste. Moreover, their low temperatures can irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Frequent consumption of cold foods can slow intestinal movement and impair digestion. For women, it can also lead to issues such as cold uterus, menstrual irregularities, and cold hands and feet. For individuals with weaker immune systems, ice-cold foods can trigger diarrhea, stomach chills, and chronic gastritis.
Beyond these direct physical effects, excessive intake of sugary drinks may also impact mental health. Studies have shown a correlation between high-sugar diets and emotional instability, anxiety, and depression. While sugar may offer a short-term boost in mood and relaxation, the subsequent blood sugar fluctuations can cause mood swings and lead to a vicious cycle of fatigue and cravings. Moreover, excess sugar accelerates skin aging, leading to dull complexion, acne, and collagen loss — a warning sign for those who care about their appearance.
In summary, though delicious, milk tea, fruit juice, and icy desserts are high in sugar and calories while low in nutritional value. Prolonged consumption can damage multiple body systems, including the endocrine, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, dermatological, and immune systems. Instead of relying on these beverages for hydration or comfort, choosing to drink more warm water is a far healthier option. Warm water helps boost metabolism, protect the digestive system, and replenish the body’s water needs — making it one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain good health.
In today’s information-overloaded world, people often lack accurate awareness of the dangers hidden in their daily diets. Through this explanation, it is hoped that more individuals will pay attention to these “invisible killers” in their eating habits, learn to treat their bodies with care, and start making better choices — beginning with every sip of what they drink.
