This incident involving Yang Mouyuan is a complex entanglement of academic controversy, moral questions, and public backlash, which ultimately cost her the doctoral admission she had already secured at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).

The origins of the matter trace back to her dispute with a fellow student, Xiao Moumou. On July 25, 2025, the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone Court handed down a first-instance ruling, rejecting all of Yang’s claims. The court determined that her accusation of “long-distance sexual harassment” against Xiao was unfounded, concluding that Xiao’s actions at the time were simply an unconscious scratching motion caused by a skin condition, without any sexual implication or intent to harass. This ruling effectively nullified her allegations in the eyes of the law.

However, instead of keeping a low profile or issuing a public apology after the ruling, Yang chose to make a high-profile display on social media, boasting about her “triple success” — being recommended for graduate study without exams, passing the national bar exam, and securing a PhD offer in Hong Kong. Even more controversially, she hinted online that she intended to continue targeting Xiao, which provoked strong public outrage. Many criticized her for being arrogant and unreflective after losing her case.

As online discussion intensified, netizens began scrutinizing her academic record and uncovered serious issues with her master’s thesis. These included data fabrication, inventing legal provisions (such as fictional clauses of the Divorce Law), and misquoting statistics from the World Health Organization. These revelations raised grave doubts about her academic integrity.

On July 31, 2025, HKBU issued her a “moral conduct review notice,” clearly stating that if misconduct or violations were substantiated, her doctoral admission would be revoked. Three days later, on August 3, the university formally launched an independent review process to thoroughly investigate her academic and ethical conduct.

Following the investigation, on August 6, HKBU quietly removed her name from its list of provisionally admitted PhD students, without issuing a public announcement. Nonetheless, the removal signaled an official decision to rescind her admission, carried out under the university’s internal procedures.

Meanwhile, Wuhan University also took action, initiating a review of both her master’s thesis and the disciplinary measures involving Xiao, with results yet to be released. Xiao’s family publicly stated that they had suffered immense pressure from the ordeal and were seeking justice through legal channels.

From a legal dispute, the situation spiraled into an academic integrity scandal, and eventually became a matter of heated public debate. In less than two weeks, Yang’s once-polished image of “graduate school, bar exam, PhD” collapsed, leaving her without the doctoral admission and with her reputation severely tarnished.
