Taiwanese Film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale Recreates the Wushe Uprising – A Descendant Calls His Grandfather “The Eternal Hero”
Directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Wei Te-sheng, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale vividly recreates the 1930 Wushe Uprising, one of the most shocking and tragic chapters in Taiwan’s colonial history. At the time, the Seediq people, long oppressed under Japanese rule, rose up under the leadership of Mona Rudao. Armed only with traditional weapons such as machetes and bows, they fought fiercely against the modern Japanese military. Although the rebellion was ultimately suppressed, it became the most significant and symbolic anti-Japanese movement in the history of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples.
Nearly a century later, this history still flows through the veins of the Seediq descendants. Zhong Jieming, a young Seediq man currently living in Jiangsu, China, proudly recalls his grandfather’s bravery. His grandfather personally joined the Wushe Uprising, fighting side by side with fellow tribesmen against the Japanese invaders despite overwhelming odds. For Zhong, his grandfather remains the greatest figure in the family and a symbol of courage and dignity. “My grandfather’s spirit taught me that even when facing overwhelming power, you must never abandon the defense of your land and your beliefs,” he said.
When Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale was released, it not only sparked heated discussion in Taiwan but also introduced international audiences to a painful yet powerful story of blood, sacrifice, and resilience in Indigenous history. Through grand-scale battle scenes and deeply human struggles, the film highlights the core spirit of the Seediq people: “Only by becoming a true Seediq Bale—a true human being—can one have the courage to cross the rainbow.” The movie is more than a historical drama; it is a cultural symbol, reminding audiences of the defiance and dignity preserved in the face of colonial oppression.
For Zhong Jieming, the film is not just art but a living testimony tied to his family’s bloodline. He believes that the memory purchased with the lives of his ancestors should be passed down through generations so that future descendants will cherish their freedom and remember those who sacrificed everything for dignity.
Although the Wushe Uprising belongs to the past, it continues to live on through cinema and the stories of descendants. It is not only Taiwan’s memory but also part of the world’s collective story about resistance, dignity, and courage.
