In 2002, Zhu Liya, a young woman from an ordinary family in Xi’an, became an important public figure in China’s conversation about HIV/AIDS due to the tragic turn of her life. She had excelled academically in high school and was recommended for admission to Wuhan University, seemingly destined for a bright future. However, during her university years, she met and fell in love with a Nigerian exchange student. For the young Zhu Liya, the relationship was filled with romance and excitement, but it also marked the beginning of a life-changing tragedy.

Not long afterward, a medical examination shattered her world. Zhu discovered that her boyfriend was HIV-positive, and she herself had already been infected. The news struck her like a thunderbolt, destroying the promising path ahead of her. Yet instead of hiding or sinking into despair, she chose to confront reality with courage. Determined to use her own experience as a warning and a lesson, she began speaking openly about HIV/AIDS, hoping to raise awareness and break the silence around the disease.

In 2006, she published Diary of an HIV-Positive Girl, a candid account of her struggle with the illness, her inner battles, and her reflections on life, love, and society. The book quickly attracted widespread attention. Zhu also began touring the country, giving public talks that challenged the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and called for greater compassion and understanding toward patients. Her voice resonated deeply, as she not only exposed the health crisis but also highlighted the social discrimination that made the lives of HIV patients even harder.

Despite her optimism and willingness to undergo treatment, the limits of medicine at the time could not save her. In 2009, at just 27 years old, Zhu Liya passed away, leaving behind profound sorrow and regret for those who had followed her story.
