In Japan, besides baseball, the level of soccer has seen a significant improvement in recent years, attracting widespread attention. Many professional baseball players have stood out in the Koshien tournament, while the All Japan High School Soccer Championship, formally known as the "全国高等学校サッカー選手権大会" (All Japan High School Soccer Championship), stands out as one of the most famous and anticipated high school soccer events in Japan.
The history of the competition dates back to 1921, during the Taisho era, with the initial purpose of promoting student sports activities and enhancing the physical education of young people. The first All Japan High School Soccer Championship was held in 1922. Initially, the number of participating teams was relatively small, but over time, the scale of the competition gradually expanded.
The format of the competition is a single-elimination system, where teams progress to the next round through victories. It attracts participation from high schools across the country each year, with each team aiming to claim the title of Japan's best.
In 1933, the event's name was changed from the original "全国中等学校蹴球大会" (National High School Soccer Championship) to the current "全国高等学校サッカー選手権大会" (All Japan High School Soccer Championship). Over the years of competition, many outstanding teams and players emerged, with some schools becoming traditional powerhouses, and some players transitioning to professional careers in the Japanese soccer scene.
As time passed, the All Japan High School Soccer Championship became a nationally recognized event, attracting a large number of fans, media, and scouts each year. The honor bestowed upon the championship-winning team is prestigious, with some players having the opportunity to represent Japan or move on to play in European professional leagues.
On January 8, 2024, at the 102nd edition of the All Japan High School Soccer Championship held at the Tokyo National Stadium, after intense competition involving 3,842 teams nationwide, only 48 teams advanced to the finals. Traditional powerhouse Aomori Yamada, which had previously won championships in the 95th, 97th, and 100th editions, faced the underdog Omi. The final match, akin to the showdown between Shohoku and Akita SANNOH in the manga "Slam Dunk," did not result in a major upset. Aomori Yamada triumphed with a 3-1 victory, securing the championship. The match attracted an audience of 55,019 spectators.
