South Korea has passed relevant legislation with plans to completely ban the consumption of dog meat by 2027. However, outside of South Korea, other countries in Asia and Africa still maintain the practice of consuming dog meat. In Yulin, Guangxi, China, an annual dog meat festival is held where thousands of dogs are slaughtered and consumed. In some Northeastern regions, there is also a tradition of consuming dog meat. In Southeast Asia, dog meat is commonly viewed as a supplement and is consumed during traditional festivals in places like Northern Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Nigeria in Africa.
The culture of consuming dog meat in Korea can be traced back to the Joseon era when it was primarily a farming society that considered cows sacred, and pork was relatively scarce. Consequently, dog meat and chicken became staple foods for the common people. During the 1988 Seoul Olympics, many vendors selling dog meat were visible near the venues, leading to strong condemnation from international animal welfare groups. Under immense pressure, many dog meat shops were forced to relocate from Seoul.
In recent years, to enhance South Korea's international image, the parliament has passed relevant legislation with plans to completely ban dog meat consumption by 2027. Prior to the official implementation, the government will actively assist businesses in transitioning. Any act of purchasing, selling, or consuming dog meat within South Korea will face fines and criminal liability in the future. However, some individuals argue that this is a long-standing cultural tradition that should be respected and protected.
