At 7:59 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 took off from Boston, bound for Los Angeles with 92 people on board. Almost at the same time, United Airlines Flight 175 also departed from the same airport. To most, these were just routine cross-country flights—yet hidden among the passengers were men with a deadly plan.

At 8:46 a.m., a deafening crash shattered the morning calm. Flight 11 slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Flames and black smoke billowed into the sky. People in lower Manhattan stopped in their tracks, staring upward in disbelief. News networks cut into their broadcasts, reporting what seemed at first to be a terrible accident.

But just 17 minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., horror struck again. United Flight 175 tore into the South Tower in a fiery explosion that millions watched live on television. It became clear—America was under attack.

At 9:05 a.m., inside a classroom in Sarasota, Florida, President George W. Bush sat listening to children read aloud. His chief of staff leaned over and whispered in his ear: “America is under attack.” Bush’s expression froze. He tried to remain calm, but the fear in his eyes betrayed the gravity of the moment.

At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 plunged into the west side of the Pentagon, the heart of U.S. military command. A fireball erupted, shaking Washington, D.C., to its core.

At 9:59 a.m., after burning uncontrollably, the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed in a thunderous roar. The skyscraper disintegrated into dust and rubble, sending a choking cloud racing through Manhattan’s streets. People fled in panic, their faces and clothes covered in ash.

At 10:03 a.m., United Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Investigators later confirmed that passengers, having learned of the other hijackings, fought back against the terrorists. Their desperate resistance prevented the plane from reaching its intended target—either the White House or the Capitol. One phrase, captured in a phone call—“Let’s roll!”—became a lasting symbol of courage.

At 10:28 a.m., the North Tower collapsed, erasing the New York skyline that had defined the city for decades. In less than two hours, both towers were gone.
