As of now, 157 countries have recognized the State of Palestine, yet among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, only the United States has not extended recognition. Recently, the French President formally announced France’s recognition of Palestine, prompting enthusiastic applause at the event, with the Palestinian delegation standing in visible excitement. Shortly after, the United Kingdom also officially recognized Palestine, marking the first time in 37 years since the UN’s recognition of Palestine that the UK has done so.

Although the UK historically played a role in the region—during the British Mandate in Palestine, its policies and agreements had long-term effects on the local political landscape—it had maintained a cautious stance on formally recognizing Palestine. This delay is attributed to several factors.
