Recently, Japan has once again been shaken by a shocking “sushi terrorism” incident at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. A young female customer was caught on video maliciously opening the plastic lids covering sushi plates on the conveyor belt and deliberately touching the surface of the sushi with her fingers. Throughout the footage, the person filming could be heard laughing, seemingly encouraging the behavior. The video was later uploaded to social media, where it quickly went viral and sparked widespread outrage.
Within hours, the clip spread across X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with many Japanese netizens condemning the act as not only extremely disrespectful toward other customers but also a severe violation of food hygiene and public decency. Commentators pointed out that such acts could constitute criminal offenses under Japan’s “Obstruction of Business” or “Property Damage” laws. Since the infamous 2023 “sushi-licking” scandal in Nagoya, Japanese conveyor belt sushi chains have adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward similar pranks, making this new case all the more controversial.
On October 14, the restaurant involved issued an official statement confirming that it had identified the perpetrator through security footage and was in communication with the police. The restaurant assured customers that all affected food items had been discarded and the area sanitized, emphasizing that no health risks remained. It also announced plans to reinforce hygiene and monitoring systems — potentially introducing “made-to-order delivery” or “sealed conveyor systems” to prevent future incidents.
Local police have since launched an investigation and are reportedly considering charges under the “Forcible Obstruction of Business” statute, which carries a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment or a fine. Japanese media have noted that many such “food prank” cases are motivated by a desire for social media attention or viral fame, highlighting the darker side of online culture.
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. Many citizens have demanded strict punishment and called for restaurants and authorities to jointly establish a “zero tolerance” framework for food-related misconduct. Some netizens even urged the public disclosure of the perpetrator’s identity to serve as a deterrent. Others lamented that conveyor belt sushi — a proud symbol of Japan’s dining culture — continues to suffer from the reckless actions of a few, reflecting a decline in civic morality and the harmful influence of social media validation.
The case remains under investigation, but it has once again sparked national concern over food safety, public manners, and the erosion of trust in Japan’s beloved conveyor belt sushi industry.
