In October 2025, the Indian shipbuilding industry marked what has been described as a “historic moment.” According to the Economic Times of India on October 15, the French shipping giant and the world’s third-largest container shipping company, CMA CGM, signed a major contract with India’s Cochin Shipyard to build six liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ships valued at approximately $300 million. The deal drew widespread attention in Indian media, with many highlighting that this is the first time India has secured such a large international order, signaling its potential to emerge as an alternative to shipbuilding powerhouses like China and South Korea.
Each of the ordered container ships will have a capacity of 1,700 standard containers and will be powered by LNG, aligning with CMA CGM’s commitment to decarbonize shipping. The agreement represents not only recognition of India’s shipbuilding capabilities but also a significant step for India in establishing its presence in the global market. Currently, India ranks 16th globally in shipbuilding with a market share of less than 1%, and its goals are to enter the top 10 by 2030 and the top 5 by 2047. CMA CGM Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé noted that while the company’s larger vessels are still primarily built in China and South Korea, India presents opportunities for small- to medium-sized ship construction.
For the state-owned Cochin Shipyard, this contract is particularly significant. The shipyard previously built India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier and the country’s largest dredger, and it also handles maintenance for certain active naval vessels. In recent years, Cochin Shipyard has collaborated with the South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai, which greatly increased CMA CGM’s confidence in India’s shipbuilding capabilities and ultimately led to the signing of the contract after several months of negotiations.
This order not only raises India’s profile in the global shipbuilding industry but also provides tangible opportunities for Indian shipbuilders to secure more international contracts and expand their market presence. For India, the deal is more than just an economic transaction—it is a major endorsement of its technical expertise, production capacity, and international credibility, symbolizing the gradual transition of Indian shipbuilding from a follower to a competitive global player.
