On October 21, 2025, Eric Lu, an American pianist of Taiwanese descent, won the gold medal at the 19th Chopin International Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland, becoming the champion of this prestigious event. His victory has been hailed as a milestone in the global classical music scene and a historic achievement for Chinese musicians.

The Chopin International Piano Competition, often referred to as the “Olympics of the piano,” is held every five years and is one of the most influential piano competitions in the world. This edition attracted 642 participants from 54 countries, of whom 84 advanced to the main rounds, and ultimately 11 reached the final. The competition spanned nearly three weeks, featuring preliminary rounds, semifinals, and finals, all performed at the National Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw and broadcast globally, attracting millions of viewers online.

In the finals, Eric Lu’s performance was widely praised for its technical mastery, emotional depth, and profound interpretation of Chopin’s musical spirit. His rendition of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor was described as both controlled and expressive, balancing dramatic intensity with lyrical, poetic nuance. His artistry earned unanimous acclaim from the jury, securing him the gold medal, a €60,000 cash prize, and a presidential medal awarded by the President of Poland.

The competition’s podium was entirely dominated by Chinese-descended pianists: Chen Yutong from Canada took the silver medal, while Wang Zitong from mainland China received the bronze. Chinese pianists also earned several special awards: Lv Tianyao placed fourth and won the Best Concerto Award, Li Tianyou received the Best Polonaise Award, and Wang Zitong also won the Best Sonata Award. This marks the strongest showing by Chinese pianists in the history of the Chopin Competition, reflecting the rising standards of piano education and performance in China.

Eric Lu, aged 27, was born to a Shanghai mother and a Taiwanese father. He displayed remarkable musical talent from an early age, beginning piano studies at age four. He trained under renowned pianists Yang Jingchuan and Yin Chengzong, among others. Previously, he won the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, which launched his international career. Lu’s style is noted for its subtle introspection and structural clarity, and he has performed extensively in Boston, London, Berlin, and Shanghai, earning critical acclaim worldwide.

After winning, Lu described the achievement as “the most important and moving moment” of his musical career. He expressed gratitude to the jury and to his mother for her unwavering support. He also announced plans to begin a global concert tour, starting with a solo recital in Shanghai in November 2025, to thank his Chinese audience for their support.

The results of this year’s Chopin Competition have drawn widespread attention in the international music community. The fact that the top three prizes were claimed by Chinese-descended pianists highlights the rise of Asian piano education and performance on the world stage. Poland’s leading music journal described this edition as “the most international, diverse, and striking competition in Chopin Competition history,” while the Polish Prime Minister publicly congratulated Lu, calling him “a testament to the blending of Eastern and Western musical cultures.”

Eric Lu’s victory not only represents a personal triumph but also symbolizes the growing influence of Chinese musicians in the global classical music scene, marking a new era for Asian artists on the world stage.
