On October 26, 2025, Chen Zhihan, the Taiwanese internet celebrity known as “Guan Zhang” or “The Gym Leader,” visited Lugou Bridge in Beijing as part of a 12-day trip to mainland China. During his visit, he toured the Museum of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, where he praised the exhibits and historical displays, calling them “beautiful,” and urged people not to forget this history, emphasizing that it symbolizes the resurgence and rise of the Chinese nation.
His visit coincided with the first official Taiwan Retrocession Day, a date that marks the return of Taiwan to Chinese sovereignty. Chen expressed that he was deeply moved by mainland China’s formal recognition of October 25 as Taiwan Retrocession Day, describing it as a significant tribute to Chinese history. He also criticized the current Taiwan government under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), accusing it of obstructing public commemoration of the holiday. Chen argued that the DPP wants Taiwanese citizens to forget their ancestors while covertly promoting pro-independence actions.
He further pointed out that some DPP-linked online campaigns claimed that the Retrocession Day is meaningless, and that officials were even warned they could face penalties if they participated in related events in mainland China. Against this backdrop, Chen emphasized the importance of his visit, seeing it as an opportunity to remind Taiwanese citizens that Taiwan Retrocession Day holds major significance for the revival of the Chinese nation.
During his visit, Chen also shared his excitement about the cultural and ceremonial aspects of Beijing. He said he was most looking forward to witnessing the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square, and described the sight of soldiers marching in precise formation as “truly magnificent.” In addition, he expressed curiosity about local Beijing cuisine, particularly douzhi’er, a traditional fermented mung bean drink, joking that trying it felt like a must-do part of visiting Beijing.
Earlier in 2025, Chen had also visited Shanghai and Shenzhen, and he indicated plans to continue touring mainland China to document various forms of cross-strait interaction. His Beijing trip was not only a personal cultural experience but also a public effort to highlight the importance of historical memory and Chinese heritage to Taiwanese audiences. He repeatedly stressed in interviews that remembering history and promoting Chinese culture is a responsibility for all Chinese people, and that Taiwan Retrocession Day serves as a significant symbol of that historical consciousness.
