On April 30, 2025, the Taizhou Intermediate People’s Court in Zhejiang Province handed down a shocking first-instance verdict in a case that violated both legal and ethical boundaries: a man, in collusion with others, deliberately caused a car accident that resulted in the death of his own mother in order to fraudulently obtain insurance money. The court’s judgment reconstructed the entire sequence of events, revealing the brutal clash between familial ethics and the law.

The case dates back to September 2023, when a serious traffic accident occurred on Xibian Village Road, Jiuzu Village, Zhang’an Subdistrict, Jiaojiang District, Taizhou. The victim, a middle-aged woman named Xu, was hit by a small SUV and thrown into a nearby field. She was transported to a hospital but died that same day. A forensic examination determined that her cause of death was multiple injuries, including severe cranial and thoracic trauma, consistent with traffic accident injuries. While it initially appeared to be a routine traffic accident, police investigations revealed that the crash was deliberately staged. Three individuals orchestrated the incident with the goal of obtaining insurance compensation, including Xu’s own son, Lu (23), along with co-conspirator Yang (22) and an accomplice, Cheng, who was classified as a secondary participant.

The court noted that this crime not only constituted premeditated murder but also represented an extreme betrayal of family ethics. The motives were vile, the methods ruthless, and the social impact extremely negative, warranting severe punishment. The verdict stated that Yang and Lu, as principal offenders, should be held accountable for the full extent of their criminal actions, while Cheng, as an accomplice, would receive a mitigated sentence.

The judgment also detailed the insurance fraud scheme. In April 2023, Xu had been hospitalized due to a prior traffic accident. During this period, Yang and Lu conspired to steal the insurance payout once it was deposited. In July 2023, the insurance company transferred RMB 319,994.2 to Xu’s bank account. Without her consent, Lu took her ID card and bank card and provided the password to Yang. Yang withdrew 20,000 yuan on the same day, while Lu transferred 30,000 yuan via Alipay first to his account and then to Yang’s account, which Yang later withdrew to his personal bank account. The following day, Yang withdrew an additional 262,300 yuan. The two used the stolen funds for personal indulgence and consumption.

Ultimately, the first-instance verdict sentenced the two principal offenders, Yang and Lu, to death, while the accomplice Cheng received a seven-year prison sentence. The case has now entered the appeal process, and a final ruling has yet to be issued.

The case has caused widespread public outrage, with many expressing shock at both the betrayal of familial trust and the extreme cruelty of the crime. It serves as a stark warning regarding insurance fraud and financial security, while also highlighting the judicial system’s role in upholding family ethics and social order. The case reinforces the principle that even close relatives cannot exploit life for personal gain; such actions will face the most severe consequences under the law.
