1996年9月，田永明因強姦案被判刑入獄，罪名涉及對受害人趙某某的性侵行為。刑期結束後僅四個月，田永明懷有報復心理，持刀前往尋找趙某某。在過程中，一名男子劉銘富試圖勸阻他，田永明不但連續捅刺劉氏，還追逐並刺向趙某某，最終導致劉銘富當場死亡，而趙某某僅受輕傷。隨後，田永明逃亡長達近二十年，期間成功躲避警方追捕，直到被抓獲歸案。

案件在法律程式上經歷多輪審理。玉溪市中級人民法院一審認定田永明犯有故意殺人罪，判處死刑，緩期二年執行，並剝奪政治權利終身。田永明對一審判決不服，提出上訴。隨後，雲南省高級人民法院進行二審審理，最終裁定駁回上訴，維持原判，並核准田永明死刑，緩期二年執行，同樣剝奪政治權利終身。

In September 1996, Tian Yongming was sentenced to prison for the rape of Zhao. Only four months after his release, Tian, harboring a desire for revenge, armed himself with a knife and sought out Zhao. During the incident, a man named Liu Mingfu attempted to intervene and stop him, but Tian stabbed Liu multiple times. He then pursued Zhao and attacked her as well, resulting in Liu Mingfu’s death and Zhao sustaining minor injuries. Following the attack, Tian Yongming fled and remained at large for nearly two decades before finally being apprehended and brought to justice.

The legal proceedings involved multiple levels of review. In the first trial, the Yuxi Intermediate People’s Court found Tian guilty of intentional homicide, sentencing him to death with a two-year reprieve and lifetime deprivation of political rights. Dissatisfied with the verdict, Tian appealed the decision. Subsequently, the Yunnan Provincial Higher People’s Court conducted the second-instance trial and rejected the appeal, upholding the original sentence and approving the death penalty with a two-year reprieve, along with lifelong deprivation of political rights.

The case attracted public attention due to its premeditated revenge, resulting in death, and the defendant’s prolonged fugitive status. The court’s rulings reflect the judiciary’s stringent approach to deliberate homicide, ensuring both protection for victims and their families and the consistent enforcement of criminal justice in cases involving violent retaliation and long-term absconders.
