Sentencing Increased for Nth Room Mastermind Cho Ju-bin: Total Term of 47 Years and 4 Months

The South Korean "Nth Room" case is a notorious digital sexual violence crime that has shocked the world in recent years. The increased sentencing of its main perpetrator, Cho Ju-bin, to a cumulative term of 47 years and 4 months, reflects the South Korean judiciary's determination to impose strict penalties for this type of offense.

The "Nth Room" was not a single entity, but rather a collection of sexually exploitative and violent chat rooms operated on the encrypted messaging application Telegram by various criminals, including "Doctor" Cho Ju-bin and "Gatgat."

Cho Ju-bin, operating under the alias "Doctor" (Baksa), was the leader of the largest and most systematically organized of these criminal groups. Between May 2019 and February 2020, he created several secret, paywalled chat rooms on Telegram, collectively known as the "Doctor's Room."Cho Ju-bin's criminal methods were extremely malicious and systematic. He primarily acquired and controlled his victims through the following means:

  1. Luring and Threats: He would initially approach victims on social media, using the lure of high-paying part-time jobs, and ask them to provide private photos or videos. Once the victims complied, Cho Ju-bin immediately resorted to threats, using these images and the victims' personal information (such as addresses, schools, and family details) to coerce them.
  2. Sexual Violence and Abuse: Cho Ju-bin forced the victims to film various perverse, humiliating, and violent sexual acts. He even demanded that victims carve words like "slave" onto their bodies and subjected them to various forms of abuse and insult.
  3. Victim Demographics: According to court findings, the number of victims in Cho Ju-bin's group was substantial, including 16 minors. The youngest victim was only 11 years old, highlighting the extreme cruelty and lawlessness of the criminal acts.

Cho Ju-bin profited enormously from these illegal videos. He categorized the chat rooms into different tiers, with the level of access to the explicit content determined by the membership "entry fee," which ranged from hundreds of thousands to millions of Korean won. Cho Ju-bin illegally earned billions of Korean won (KRW) from this scheme. The paid members, by viewing and disseminating these sexual violence videos, indirectly became accomplices in the sex exploitation crimes.

Cho Ju-bin was initially sentenced to 42 years in prison for multiple charges, including violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes and the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse.

However, in subsequent proceedings, the court held additional trials and sentencing for his specific acts of sexual violence against minors. The latest ruling added another five years to his sentence, bringing his cumulative prison term to a total of 47 years and 4 months.

This increased sentence reflects the zero-tolerance stance of South Korean society and the judiciary toward digital sex crimes. The courts have taken the harshest possible measures, especially concerning the sexual exploitation of minors, aiming to deter potential copycat offenders and deliver profound justice to the victims. The case has also spurred the South Korean government to strengthen legislation and enforcement efforts against digital sexual violence, leading to amendments in relevant laws.
