A long-established Chinese gold and jewelry brand, traditionally associated with classic craftsmanship and precious metals, has recently ventured into pop culture collaborations, and its latest partnership with Pokémon came as a genuine surprise to many. Rather than launching conventional gold jewelry or commemorative bars, the Lao Feng Xiang × Pokémon collaboration centers on a Meowth figurine, a choice that immediately caught attention. Given Meowth’s long-standing association with coins and wealth in the Pokémon universe, the concept feels unexpectedly fitting.
The highlight of this Meowth figure is the coin on top of its head, which is indeed made of pure gold. From a design perspective, it cleverly brings the animated idea of Meowth producing coins into the real world, leading many fans to jokingly call it a “real gold-coin Meowth.” Conceptually, the product succeeds in blending Lao Feng Xiang’s identity as a gold brand with Pokémon’s iconic imagery, creating a strong visual and thematic connection.
Alongside the Meowth figurine, Lao Feng Xiang also released a series of Pokémon-themed gold cards at the same time. These designs draw inspiration from recent Pokémon titles and related media, featuring several popular characters from the Pokémon Horizons era, including Captain Pikachu, the Paldea starter trio from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and the ever-popular Charizard. These gold cards are clearly positioned as collectible memorabilia, with refined designs aimed more at fans and collectors than at traditional gold buyers.
However, when examined from the perspective of actual gold content, the products are relatively modest. Each gold card contains only about 0.05 grams of gold, while the coin on Meowth’s head weighs approximately 0.01 grams. As such, these items are largely symbolic and commemorative rather than meaningful in terms of intrinsic gold value. Consumers expecting a more substantial amount of precious metal may find this aspect disappointing.
Overall, the Lao Feng Xiang × Pokémon collaboration is better understood as a cross-brand, fan-oriented merchandise line rather than a traditional gold investment product. Its appeal lies primarily in the IP collaboration, creative design, and novelty value, not in gold weight or cost-performance. For dedicated Pokémon fans or collectors who enjoy unique crossover items, the “real gold-coin Meowth” has undeniable charm and commemorative significance. For buyers focused on gold content and value retention, however, this series may not be a particularly attractive purchase.
