Recently, Japanese society has been shaken by the exposure of an extremely disturbing criminal case. A 39-year-old man, Yohei Ono, allegedly conspired with his wife and adopted daughter over an extended period to lure women into sexual relationships, secretly film the encounters without consent, and profit from the footage. After the case came to light, it sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate over “family-based accomplice crimes” and the growing problem of digital sexual exploitation.
Investigators revealed that Ono carefully cultivated a provocative online persona on social media. He claimed to practice “polygamy,” a notion that, in Japan’s traditionally conservative and socially restrained environment, carries an inherent sense of rebellion and taboo, making it particularly alluring to some. According to police, however, this so-called progressive lifestyle was nothing more than a carefully constructed digital stage designed to facilitate crime. Standing beside him on this stage were his 28-year-old wife, Haruka Ono, and his 23-year-old adopted daughter, Rin Ono.
Together, the three formed a highly coordinated and efficient criminal unit. In conventional thinking, family is often seen as a barrier against wrongdoing, a final line of moral defense. Yet within Ono’s household, family became a breeding ground for crime. Rather than restraining his actions, his wife and adopted daughter served as powerful “endorsements of trust,” helping him disarm potential victims. When women encountered Ono online and saw that his wife and adopted daughter were openly involved in his life, their sense of caution was often significantly reduced, leading them to believe they were entering a transparent and safe relationship dynamic.
What these women were actually drawn into, however, was not a utopia of free love or alternative relationships, but a meticulously arranged filming set. Police stated that hidden cameras had already been installed in designated locations. Every physical interaction and moment of intimacy was recorded without the victims’ knowledge, later converted into content sold on paid adult websites.
According to police reports, over a period of two years and three months, the trio earned more than 50 million yen from the illegal sale of these videos. Behind this staggering sum were approximately 860 video clips involving the private moments of more than 100 victims. The case starkly illustrates a terrifying evolution of modern sexual crime: exploitation has shifted from direct physical violation to the systematic theft, digitization, and monetization of personal information and dignity. Ono was not satisfied with exerting control on a physical level; his true focus lay in transforming that control into a tradable commodity. In the dark corners of subscription-based websites, the dignity of over a hundred women was reduced to clearly priced digital goods.
Notably, Yohei Ono was not a first-time offender. In November of the previous year, he had already been arrested on suspicion of unlawfully confining a teenage girl, an incident that revealed his tendencies toward violence and domination. However, the legal system appears to have failed to recognize him at that time as a potentially serial predator. After his release, he did not restrain his behavior. Instead, he refined his methods, expanded the scale of his operations, and further “industrialized” his crimes, ultimately leading to an even greater number of victims.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the case has prompted renewed scrutiny within Japanese society of sexual crime prevention, the responsibility of online platforms, and shortcomings in the justice system’s ability to intervene early and assess risk. For the public, this is not merely a shocking criminal case, but a grim reflection of how trust can be manipulated in the digital age, and how the role of family itself can be profoundly distorted.
