Nintendo ultimately did not continue its collaboration with Sony on console development, primarily because it unilaterally broke the partnership during the critical stages of developing the CD-ROM-based Nintendo PlayStation and instead chose to collaborate with Philips. This decision angered Sony, prompting the company to develop its own console, which ultimately led to the creation of the PlayStation (PS) and fundamentally changed the history of the gaming industry. Nintendo’s move was driven by a desire to prevent Sony from gaining full control over CD-based game rights and related profits, thereby protecting its authority over game content.
The key event that led to the collapse of the partnership occurred at the 1991 CES in the United States. At that time, Nintendo publicly announced its collaboration with Philips to develop a CD-ROM add-on while allowing Sony to continue console development only under the condition that Sony relinquish the CD game rights. This decision left Sony’s engineering team—who had invested years of effort—feeling betrayed and highlighted Nintendo’s deep concerns over game content rights. Then-president Hiroshi Yamauchi realized that the original contract granting Sony the CD game rights could result in Nintendo losing control over its own game content, prompting him to seek a new partner to safeguard the company’s interests.
After losing Nintendo’s cooperation, Sony quickly pivoted strategically. The company transformed the technology initially developed for Nintendo into its own product, established Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), and launched the PlayStation in 1994. This move successfully ushered in the era of 3D CD-based gaming and cemented Sony’s central position in the console market. The shift also attracted major titles, including Final Fantasy VII, to the PlayStation platform, further solidifying Sony’s influence in the gaming industry.
In summary, Nintendo’s last-minute change of direction and insistence on retaining rights ended the original collaboration, but it indirectly led to the birth of the PlayStation. This event marked the beginning of the next generation of console competition and fundamentally reshaped the history of the gaming industry.
