Recently, the Changning Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau uncovered a major fraud case. A woman named Huang impersonated a wealthy heir and fabricated a trust company business, luring her friend Liu into transferring over 13 million RMB. The incident has attracted widespread attention, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of verifying identities and financial sources when engaging in investments or large transactions.

The case details show that Huang met Liu in October 2024, quickly forming what appeared to be a close friendship. During their interactions, Huang claimed to come from a wealthy family, presenting herself as a “rich second generation,” and stated that she worked at a well-known trust company dealing in high-end businesses such as antique auctions and luxury goods trading. Huang meticulously crafted a false persona of success, frequently posting photos of a luxurious lifestyle and travels on social media, which led Liu to trust her.

The core fraud involved promises of high returns. After learning that Liu had an overseas bank account, Huang proposed transferring 80 million RMB from abroad into China via Liu’s account. She claimed that once the transaction was successful, they could split a 4% company bonus, amounting to 1.6 million RMB. Lured by the high return, Liu agreed. However, over the following months, Huang repeatedly requested that Liu transfer smaller sums—ranging from a few thousand to over a hundred thousand RMB—into designated accounts under various pretexts such as covering advance profits, lawyer fees, and exchange rate differences. In total, Huang fraudulently obtained more than 13 million RMB. Liu never received the promised bonus, and only confessed the truth after relatives confronted her over debts.

Police investigations revealed that Huang’s “successful entrepreneur” persona was entirely fabricated. In reality, she was unemployed, had no stable income, and spent all the defrauded money on personal extravagance, including global travel, chartered flights, luxury shopping, fine dining, and expensive alcohol. Authorities noted that her spending was extreme, with trips costing seven to eight hundred thousand RMB or more, meals over ten thousand RMB each, and drinks costing upwards of ten thousand RMB per occasion. Huang confessed to her fraudulent activities after being apprehended. She is currently under criminal detention, and the case remains under further investigation.

The social implications of this case are significant. It underscores the need for the public to rigorously verify identities, sources of funds, and the legitimacy of transactions, even when dealing with friends or acquaintances. Fabricated identities and promises of high returns are classic indicators of fraud, and over-trusting friends’ recommendations can lead to substantial financial losses. Authorities advise that anyone encountering similar situations report to the police immediately and avoid making transfers without proper verification.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, raising public awareness about the dangers of “acquaintance fraud” and highlighting the importance of vigilance and financial security in daily life.
