Nintendo recently announced that starting from May 2026, it will implement a “digital versus physical pricing” strategy for its Nintendo Switch 2 (NS2) exclusive titles. This new policy applies specifically to Switch 2 exclusives published by Nintendo itself, while third-party developers remain free to set pricing for their games across different formats.

The first game to adopt this strategy is Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, scheduled for release on May 21, 2026. According to the announcement, the digital version will have a suggested retail price of $59.99, while the physical boxed edition will be priced at $69.99, creating a $10 difference. Nintendo explained that the higher price for the physical edition reflects the additional costs of production and distribution for the packaging.

Regarding the Switch 2 platform, the announcement highlighted that starting in May, certain new titles will be exclusive to NS2 and will no longer be available on the original Switch, underscoring the platform’s exclusivity. While the suggested retail price of physical editions is slightly higher, actual market prices at retail channels such as PChome 24h Shopping and momo Shopping may fluctuate, and physical copies also retain resale and circulation value. In terms of hardware compatibility, the Switch 2 is expected to be backward compatible with most original Switch games, allowing players to continue enjoying their existing library while upgrading to the new console.

Overall, Nintendo’s approach aims to balance the cost and perceived value between digital and physical editions, emphasize the exclusivity of the Switch 2 platform, and provide players with more purchasing options and flexibility.
