Beijing has Tiananmen Square, Taiwan has Ketagalan Boulevard, and Ukraine has Independence Square (Майдан Незалежності / Maidan Nezalezhnosti). In the Orange Revolution of 2004, half a million protesters supporting Yushchenko gathered at Independence Square to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the presidential election controversy.

In November 2013, the Ukrainian government rejected the economic and trade cooperation agreement with the European Union and turned to Russia, sparking instant public discontent. The long-standing debate between pro-European and pro-Russian factions resurfaced. The following February, President Viktor Yanukovych, who ordered the violent crackdown on the people, fled to Russia. In March 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula, laying the groundwork for the Ukrainian-Russian war that erupted in February 2022. To learn more about the actual conflicts in 2013, you can watch the free Netflix documentary "Winter on Fire" on YouTube, which vividly describes the process of young people protesting against the government, resulting in at least a hundred deaths. These significant historical events and protests all took place at Independence Square in Kyiv.

Many banks and government agencies are located here, and on holidays, the roads are blocked, similar to Japan's pedestrian paradise, allowing people to freely walk on the main roads, with street performers along the way. Don't forget to take photos at the Independence Monument; the sculpture on the pillar is the Slavic goddess Berehynia. Behind it is the famous old hotel, where one night's stay costs about 1500-2500 Taiwanese dollars. For shopping enthusiasts, you can visit the Globe shopping center on the square.

Because this is a must-visit destination for many tourists, there are many scams to be aware of, such as asking you to take a photo and then demanding a high fee for it. In such cases, you can delete the photo or refuse. There are also vendors who will make pigeons touch you and then pretend the pigeon is injured, demanding compensation, or selling expensive hand ropes for $200-300 UAH each, claiming to support Ukrainian soldiers.

You can reach Independence Square by taking the blue M2 line to Independence Square station or the red M1 line. Like most local subways, there are underground passages on both sides of the road for pedestrians. There are many underground pedestrian passages at Independence Square. If you visit in winter, it's a good place to escape the cold, but the lighting is a bit dim, so be sure to walk safely.
